Tesla STEM student selected to participate in Research Science Institute at MIT

The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) announced that Maya Ganesan (Redmond), a rising senior at Tesla STEM High School, is one of 83 top-achieving U.S. scholars and international scholars attending the 31st annual Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is jointly sponsored by CEE and MIT. The program began on June 22 and runs through August 2.

 

RSI is a six-week intensive program that provides students with the opportunity to conduct original, cutting edge research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities.

 

The RSI Selection Committee chose high school students who are exemplary based on the following criteria: high school records, personal essays, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, research experience, potential for leadership, and honors and awards in math and science. RSI scholars participate in college-level research under the mentorship of leading scientists, engineers, and researchers in the Boston area.

 

Three Kirkland schools recognized through King County Green Schools Program

Environmental and Adventure School (EAS) and Sandburg Elementary / Discovery Community School have been recognized through the King County Green Schools Program for their energy conservation and waste reduction efforts. EAS has been named a Level One Green School for Waste Reduction and Recycling. It is one of only 13 schools to be recognized this year. Carl Sandburg / Discovery Community School was one of 11 schools recognized as a Level Three Green School, meaning that they sustained their Level One waste reduction and recycling efforts and their Level Two energy conservation strategies, but also educated students and staff on how to conserve water and protect water quality. King County honors 11 businesses in Redmond for waste reduction

King County’s Solid Waste Division recently announced that 97 local companies have been named to the 2014 “Best Workplaces for Recycling and Waste Reduction” list, including 11 businesses/offices in Redmond. This is the highest number of businesses listed since the program began in 2007. The list recognizes businesses for their innovative recycling practices and commitment to reducing the amount of waste their company produces.

 

This year’s businesses adopted an array of creative recycling and waste reduction strategies, from creating liquid fertilizer out of food scraps to using electric delivery vehicles. I can offer interviews with King County Solid Waste representatives about business waste reduction, as well as contacts for Redmond businesses that made the list. 4Culture and King County Parks have commissioned Seattle-based artist Kristen Ramirez to create a colorful mural along the Burke-Gilman Trail in the Wayne Tunnel, a 250-foot-long passageway under 96th Avenue Northeast in Bothell. City Council approves $4,197,000 for 116th Street NE improvements

City Council grants Santana Excavation $4,197,000 to improve 116th Street NE


This is the second phase of the NE 116th Street corridor improvements to be built by the

City. The first phase lowered NE 116th Street between 167th Avenue NE and 172nd

Avenue NE to improve sight distance, safety and provide for safe emergency vehicle

access for Fire Station No. 17. This phase also set the stage for construction of the full

roadway section and a roundabout at the intersection of 172nd Avenue NE.

The current phase of construction will complete the corridor improvements between 167th

Avenue NE and 174th Avenue NE. Improvements include; two travel lanes, a center turn

lane, bike lanes on both sides, sidewalks, soft trail on the north side, a signalized

pedestrian crossing, street lighting, storm drain system and detention pond, replacement

of the existing water main, landscaping, conversion of overhead utilities to underground,

and a roundabout at the intersection of NE 116th Street and 172nd Avenue NE.

Redmond Police Search Warrant Recovers Stolen Property and Drugs

Redmond, WA – At approximately 6:00 AM on June 27, 2014 Redmond Police SWAT served a search warrant at a residence located in the 7300 block of 132 Ave NE.  The warrant was related to Trafficking in Stolen Property as well as VUCSA. 
As a result of the search warrant Redmond Investigators recovered a significant amount of stolen property from the residence.  The stolen property is related to several burglaries at new construction sites on the Eastside and includes commercial power tools and building supplies.  Small amounts of heroin and methamphetamine were also located and confiscated from the residence.
Investigators were able to detain and arrest three male suspects at the residence.  One was arrested on a felony warrant and the other two on other misdemeanor charges.  More arrests are anticipated related to the possession and trafficking of stolen property.
Redmond Pro- Act Officers are continuing to investigate to identify additional victims.

Neighborhood Walking Ambassador trainings July 8.

I am excited to let you know that Feet First will be working with the Redmond community next month when we'll be hosting Neighborhood Walking Ambassador trainings in Downtown Redmond  on Tuesday, July 8th from 5:30-8:00pm and Saturday, July 19th from 10:30am-1:00pm that give people the know-how to build walking tours inspired by Redmond’s great trails, public art, nature, history, and parks. A new walk series will culminate on Friday, August 8 with a community concert along the Sammamish River Trail at a secret location by Redmond resident sound artist Rulon Brown, which is supported by 4Culture Site Specific and the Redmond Arts Program.

Redmond, Wash. – At its June 23 meeting, the Lake Washington School District Board of Directors received a draft budget for the 2014-15 school year that included an increase of 6.7% in revenues, rising from $256.3 million to $273.4 million in the general fund. Tesla STEM High School takes home $30,000 in prize money in "Imagination Tomorrow" competition

Tesla STEM Students win big at Imagine Tomorrow renewable energy competition

Students from Eastlake High School, International Community School and Tesla STEM High School were among the 186 teams that competed in the Washington State University Imagine Tomorrow competition. It was held in Pullman, Wash., May 29-31. Tesla STEM High School was the big winner in this competition. They took home more than $30,000 in prize money and won six out of the 16 prizes awarded to students.

 

Imagine Tomorrow asks ninth through 12th graders to address the topic of renewable energy. Students can answer any of four challenges: biofuels, technology, behavior, or design. They must be from schools in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Students develop their answers and deliver presentations in teams of two to five students.

 

Biofuels Challenge:

·         Tesla STEM High School – first place: “Cellulosic Ethanol: A New Look at the Transition to Renewable Energy” - $1,000 for each student and $5,000 for their school. These five students will go to Washington, D.C., to meet Dr. Ernest Moniz, Secretary of Energy, and Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray.

·         Eastlake High School – fourth place: “Yeast DNA Splicing” - $250 for each student and $1,000 for their school

 
Technology Challenge:

·         Tesla STEM High School – first place: “Reimagining the Electric Car” - $1,000 for each student and $5,000 for their school

·         Tesla STEM High School – second place: “Step On Carbon” - $750 for each student and $3,000 for their school

·         Tesla STEM High School – third place: “Solar Light Tower” - $500 for each student and $1,500 for their school

 
Design Challenge:

·         Tesla STEM High School – fourth place: “EDGES” - $250 for each student and $1,000 for their school

166th Ave NE Rechannelization and School Zone Improvements Move Forward

Council awarded a bid for the 166th Avenue NE Rechannelization and School Zone and Traffic

Safety Improvements, City Project to Road Construction Northwest, Inc., of Renton, Washington, for the amount bid of $1,075,156.65.  The construction on 166th Ave NE between NE 85th Street and NE 100th Street will include:

· Restriping lanes

· Installing traffic calming medians

· Establishing safe pedestrian crossings at two locations:

o NE 95th Street - installing an overhead flashing beacon, a street luminaire,

and flashing signs

o South of NE 91st Street – installing a crosswalk with a median and

flashing signs

· Signal modifications for protected left onto NE 85th Street

Redmond, WA -  The City of Redmond’s Cleveland Streetscape project begins phase 2 of construction on Monday, June 16 through Sep. 1, 2014. One traffic lane will be open evenings from 3:30 pm – 7 am, and all weekend, between 161st Ave NE to 164th Ave NE. City of Redmond is seeking a partner to provide preschool programming at Farrel-McWhirter Park

Redmond, WA -  City of Redmond Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a partnering organization to provide preschool programming at Farrel-McWhirter Park for the 2014-2015 school years. The City issued a formal Request for Proposals on June 9 for the preschool program to serve children ages 3-5. The contracted partner organization will provide a comprehensive preschool program with a focus on preparing children for kindergarten, learning through play and developing social skills. The historic park provides a unique opportunity for preschoolers to learn and play in the farm, nature and forest setting. 28 year old Maile Attacked by 3 Known Suspects

Redmond, WA – At 3:07 pm today, several employees of an office building in the 8400 block of 154^th Ave NE located a 28 year old male suffering from multiple stab wounds.  The male had walked to the office building from an adjacent trail.  The employees administered first aid and called 911.  The injuries appeared to be life threatening.  The victim was treated by Redmond Fire Department personnel and immediately transported to Harborview Medical Center.  The victim is now in stable condition.  Read More >>

Abby and Deanna will cover what signs and symptoms to look for and how to get someone into treatment.  They will share information on current research and statistics about what drugs are impacting our youth the most right now, and how the legalization of marijuana has impacted their clients.

International Student's Art Earns Silver Medal at Carnegie Hall

 Accolades for Li’s Sculpture “Carp”

 

Redmond, WA – Last weekend Shi (Roxanne) Li, a junior at The Bear Creek School, and her art teacher Trinity Osborn were both honored at Carnegie Hall. Li’s sculpture “Carp” earned national recognition from the 2014 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, receiving a Silver Medal and the invitation to New York City for the awards ceremony. Mrs. Osborn was honored at the awards ceremony for her outstanding achievement as an art educator whose dedication, commitment, and guidance are represented by student work selected for national honors. Over 255,000 original works of art and writing were submitted to the 2014 Awards and just 1,800 were honored as National Medalists.  Read More >>

 

Last spring Shi (Roxanne) Li, then a sophomore at The Bear Creek School, enrolled in Mrs. Osborn’s Sculpture and Mixed Media class and created an amazing sculpture, “Carp.” Although “Carp” appears to be made of bronze, it is actually constructed from plaster, wire, newspaper, and acrylic paint. In the fall, Roxanne entered her sculpture in two major art contests and has been well decorated for her effort.

 

Roxanne entered “Carp” in the 2014 West Art Region-at-Large Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest. In the regional contest representing students from Montana, Utah, Idaho, and parts of Washington and Oregon, approximately 5% of all submissions, including Roxanne's piece, are recognized with Gold Key awards. Gold Key recipients are eligible for national medalist consideration. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, and Joyce Carol Oates.

 

 “Carp” was also entered in the Puget Sound Educational Service District Regional High School Art Show where Roxanne won three awards. She was a Regional Winner, which advanced her piece to the State Superintendent's High School Art Show in Olympia. She also earned the Board of Director's Honorable Mention Award and the Overall Best in Show Award (3D) for receiving the highest accumulation of points from the judges in the 3D category.

 

The Puget Sound Educational Service District represents 16 school district including 19 private schools, 42 public schools in King County, and 35 public schools in Pierce County. Roxanne's piece was on exhibit at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction headquarters in Olympia earlier this spring.

 

Roxanne is an international student from Guangzhou, China and currently a junior at The Bear Creek School. She has been a student at Bear Creek since grade 9, and lives with a local host family.  Her older sister Josie Xian (Josie) Li graduated from Bear Creek in 2013.
