Lots of entertainment and fun at MAPS "Art and Culture Day"

Plenty of good art and entertainment at Saturday's MAPS "Art and Culture Day"

Last Saturday was an excellent day to connect with the Muslim residents and some of the culture of greater Redmond.  This is a photo of  some visitors to the "Arts and Culture Day" held the mosque in SE Redmond.  (Their dress can be art it itself). We were fortunate to run into Hyder Ali in the morning who told us exciting news that the Mayor of Bellevue and Redmond Police Chief Gibson had already stopped by.

Hyder is a resident of greater Redmond, works at Microsoft and is President of MAPS (Muslim Ass'n of Puget Sound), the sponsoring organization.  The event was held in a SE Redmond Muslim mosque named "Maasjid Ar-Rahmah," which is also a gathering place for the cultural community.  We enjoyed a brief visit with Hyder's son.The Event was very entertaining and fun with dancing and singing and we learned a lot about the cultures of Syria, Libya, Pakistan, Palestine, and Turkey at their art exhibits.  Hopefully, a slide show to follow.  Please send in your pictures!

Redmond Bike Park work party cancelled. Potential for appeal of Site Plan application

Redmond Bike Park - Credit Bob Yoder
Redmond Bike Park work party, scheduled for June 18 and 19, is cancelled until further notice. The City will announce a revised construction schedule as it comes available.
There is potential for an appeal of the site plan entitlement application to be filed. All design materials and the SEPA checklist for are posted on the project website at http://www.redmondbikepark.com/HOME.html  under the document library.
Over the past two years, the City worked with community members to determine how to legitimize dirt jumps built on City property. After a series of public meetings, field trips to other bike parks and trails and design workshops, the community approved plans developed by Hilride Progression Development Group. The design consists of five dirt-jump style trails for BMX and mountain bike riders. There will be a progression of trails from beginner to advanced, including a pump track that can be ridden by people of all skill levels.

The City has two partners on this project, Realize Redmond and Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance. It is supported or sponsored by Bikes Belong, Specialized Bicycle Components through Pacific Bicycles Company, Whole Foods Market, Sun Belt Rentals, Transition Bicycles and Redline Bicycles.

For more information, visit the project website at www.redmond.gov/bikepark  or contact the project manager, Carolyn Hope at 425-556-2313 or cjhope@redmond.gov

Cyber-bullying: Abuse takes its toll on a new generation of American youth.

Northwest Asian Weekly Cyber-bullying: Abuse takes its toll on a new generation of American youth :

"The state of Washington presumes that children from age 8 to 11 cannot commit crimes.

Think again. On April 23, two sixth grade girls in the Issaquah School District were charged by King County Juvenile Court for cyber-stalking. They hacked into the Facebook account of Leslie Cote, a classmate and former friend. The girls posted sexually explicit pictures and, using Cote’s name, solicited boys for sex".

When your Teen Wants a Tattoo or Piercing, by Patti Skelton-McGougan

When Your Teen Wants a Tattoo or Piercing
Talking about this big decision

Like the youth of the 1960’s who expressed themselves with long hair and funky clothes, today’s teens are using body marking to be ‘different’ and express their individuality. A piercing or tattoo is a way your teen says, “I'm growing up and making my own decisions, even if you don’t like it!”

You can say no, but how do you both respect your teen's need for independence and avoid rebellious behavior?  Read more >>

Important Trends You Want To Know About

"Important Trends You Want to Know About"

Fake pot banned by FDA--A few months ago we shared with you the dangers of synthetic marijuana, also called Spice, K2 and herbal incense. It was recently in the news when a driver high on Spice drove into pedestrians at the Pike Place Market. The FDA has used its emergency authority to initiate a ban on this substance for at least a year, making it illegal to sell or possess. They will be studying the chemicals more and the temporary ban may lead to something more permanent.

Teen marijuana use up--Marijuana use is up in American teens while alcohol use has declined, according to an annual government study of 8th-, 10th- and 12th-graders across the country. However, alcohol is still the #1 drug of choice among teens with approximately 23% of high school seniors reporting binge drinking.
For "Seattle Times" survey, Click Here

Early use of pot may change the brain--Smoking marijuana regularly before the age of 16 causes changes in the brain that can impair a young person's ability to focus, learn from mistakes and think abstractly, according to a Harvard study. To read more, Click Here.

School Resource Officers Program is Renewed

The Redmond City Council approved $40,000 funding from Lake Washington School District to continue the School Resource Program through July 1, 2011.

The City of Redmond will continue to provide three regularly employed Resource Officers assigned to the following areas of coverage:  one at Redmond High School, one at Redmond Junior High, and one at Rose Hill Junior High.   The services provided by the SRO's are in addition to the normal police services already provided by the City.

Although assigned Redmond High, Redmond Junior High and Rose Hill Junior High the SRO's may provide coverage to other nearby schools and areas surrounding these principle schools.  The goal of the SRO program is to foster a positive image of police officers among young people.  The Redmond Chief of Police, with input from the District, will choose the SRO's.

The School Resource Officers will act as a law enforcement resource, maintain the peace on school district property, provide law enforcement counseling and other duties.

City Council approved the continued contract with LWSD during the "consent agenda" of their Regular Meeting on January 4th.  Source:   AM No. 11-005 (C7).

2.5M Kinect units sold in 25 days

Microsoft may just have a holiday hit on its hands -- and it is called Kinect. The company announced today that the Xbox 360 accessory, which allows users to control game play through body motion and voice commands, has sold more than 2.5 million units since its launch 25 days ago.

That's a pretty good start, with the company reaffirming in today's press release that it is on track to hit the holiday goal of five million units sold. In fact, Marshall Kirkpatrick at ReadWriteWeb notes that it took Apple twice as long (two months) to sell two million iPads.    Read More. ...

16 Redmond Rouser's Rotarians are Changing the World

Redmond's Rouser's Rotarians - Students of the Month
16  Redmond Rousers' Rotarians are Changing the World

The Redmond Rousers Rotary Club meets at 5:30 PM Tuesdays for dinner & fellowship at Fairwinds Leisure Care at 9988 Avondale NE (at the corner of Avondale & Novelty Hill Road). We have just added 11 new members, to further our goals of helping others & promoting peace, says Club President, Kelly Kyle.

Tuesday Oct 19th, our Students of the Month honorees were Saleem & Holly from EHS. These kids are so awesome, said musician Janet Baltzo, a new member. "I could listen to their stories all day. This is so cool!" The Redmond Rousers honor students who have turned their lives around and picked up the pieces. "Everyone has troubles now and then, stated Saleem, "You just go on & try harder". Many people in the audience, nodded their heads in agreement, while new member Scott Bell video recorded the meeting to post later. Scott is looking for others who are interested in recordings and reaching out to do social media or promoting their business. You can reach him or others by going to our website and clicking on their names. It will take you right to their site.

Thursday, Oct 21st, at 11am, the Rotary Rouser members gave 61 FREE dictionaries to the Einstein Elementary 3rd grade kids. This year we have a new way to give the books. The sponsors & the club go in half & half on the cost, but the sponsor gets to pick the school. This year, new member, Dr. Aditi Agarwal, local Dentist on the corner of Avondale & 116th decided to pick the closest school to her new business. The students were thrilled when we told them they had a NEW BOOK to take home. President Kelly talked about the eradication of POLIO worldwide, and why healthy kids all over the world are so important to Rotarians. Dr Aditi brought in her large teeth display & explained why cleaning teeth is so important for good oral hygiene. All the kids had so much fun looking up new words in their new book, and each 3rd grade teacher received a new book for their classroom too.

Beware of the Latest Youth Drug Trend

Beware of the Latest Youth Drug Trend

Spice, K2 or "fake pot" is legal, but dangerous

There's a new drug trend among youth that you should be aware of--an herbal and chemical product which mimics the effects of marijuana. It's best known by the brand names K2 or Spice and some are referring to it as herbal incense or "fake weed." Whatever brand name it goes by, it's proving to be dangerous and I urge you to talk with your teens about the potential side effects.

Overlake Squadron Civil Air Patrol Cadets Meet at LW School District Offices

Overlake Squadron CAP Color Guard in Safeco Stadium --  will perform in community upon request
from the desk of Mike Holliday....
One of the best kept secrets in town is the Overlake Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. CAP has been around since 1941 and has 60,000 members across the country in 1500 Squadrons.

The Overlake unit has been here for 15 years and is mainly a Cadet Squadron made up of young people aged 12-18 operating from the Lake Washington School District Resource Center located in the Redmond Town Center.

The unit meets throughout the year on Tuesday evenings from 6:45-9:00pm. CAP operates like a military unit, wears the USAF uniforms, but is an all volunteer civilian organization with no obligation for military service.

The Squadron is holding a recruiting campaign during the month of September for new cadets as well as adults who support the operation. Of particular interest are adults who are pilots, medical, web-site design, and emergency services personnel.  Email Mike Holliday at:  overlake@wawg.cap.gov

We welcome the public to attend a meeting during the month of September to see the cadets training and to learn more about the Civil Air Patrol.   Read More details of the program and FAQ from Mike >>
