Sustainable Redmond Announces Spring Film Series

Redmond, WA – Sustainable Redmond (http://www.sustainableredmond.org/) is sponsoring two documentaries this spring on the Eastside. On April 17th they will show “Good Food – Sustainable Food and Farming in the Northwest” in Kirkland; and on May 10th they will present “Fixing the Future” in Redmond. This is a great chance for those on the Eastside to see some wonderful sustainability-related documentaries without having to drive to Seattle, and with free admission!   Read More >>

For the April 17th showing, Sustainable Redmond partners with other local sustainability groups to present the film “Good Food – Sustainable Food and Farming in the Northwest”, with a post-showing discussion including the filmmaker. As the film notes, “something remarkable is happening in the fields, ranches and orchards of the Pacific Northwest. Family farmers are making a comeback. They're growing much healthier food, and lots more food per acre, while using less energy and water than factory farms. And most of this food is organic.” Good Food visits producers, farmers' markets, distributors, stores, restaurants and public officials who are developing a more sustainable food system for all.

The movie will begin at 2:30pm, with post-film discussion with filmmaker Melissa Young and PCC Natural Markets’ nutrition educator Leika Suzumura, along with local CSA representatives. Learn how you, too, can be a part of this growing movement in the greater Eastside region. Representatives from local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farms and informational tables will be open from 2-4pm. The event takes place at the Kirkland Teen Center, 348 Kirkland Ave, Kirkland. Admission is free to this event, with fresh fruits, vegetables and cheese being served. Fairly-traded coffee will be provided. Please bring your own cup to avoid waste. Please visit http://www.goodfoodthemovie.org/  for more information and a preview. Partners include: Eastside Earth Educators, Sustainable Kirkland, Green Kirkland, and Sustainable Bellevue.

In May, Sustainable Redmond is partnering with the Eastside Timebank (http://www.eastsidetimebank.org/ ) to present Fixing the Future, a new documentary film produced as part of the PBS Now series. Host David Brancaccio visits communities across America using innovative approaches to create jobs and build prosperity in our new economy. It interviews leading economists, including local author David Korten, and Jane D'Arista, as well as the US Editor of The Economist, Matthew Bishop, to find out how to go about fixing capitalism, rebuilding our economy and creating jobs. It features some local examples, including the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies in Bellingham, WA, and a green fishery on Lummi Island. The film also discusses timebanking, an innovative time and skills exchange system which is now available in the Eastside through the Eastside Timebank, who will have a representative present.

The film will be shown on May 10th at the Redmond Library (15990 N.E. 85th, Redmond) in Meeting Room 2. The event opens at 6:30 pm, with informational tables and representatives from Sustainable Redmond and Eastside Timebank available. The film will be shown from 7:00 – 8:00 pm, with a post-film discussion with local sustainability representatives from 8:00 – 8:45 pm. Refreshments will be provided.
