Here's a picture of four Mustang Boys Basketball Team players (Zach Klein, Conner Flain, Leslie Ellis, Jason Harrington) that volunteered at the Swedish/Redmond: ER Open House on December 18.  They worked the Swedish/Redmond "Tree Maze" loading free evergreen Christmas trees donated by Swedish.   Clients from Hope-link and Redmond's  "Together Center" human services mall  received trees until 3:00 pm.  Free trees were open to the public afterwards.  It was a rainy/snowing day but the place was packed.

SEASON UPDATE:  As of this report, the Varsity Boys are off to a good start at 4-3.  The Team has a primed roster with seven juniors and three seniors. Zach (guard), Leslie (forward), Conner (forward) and Jason (g/f) are all Juniors. Most of their games have been close. They lost league games to the Redmond/Kirkland Lake Washington Kangaroos 42-47 on 12/11, and another squeaker to Skyline 37-41.  A couple nights ago the 'Stangs rolled over Ballard  71-58. Last night it was Camas 52-59.  Watch out for next year, though!  Coach Larson and 'Stangs look forward to the Seattle Prep Slalom Slam Tournament on12/27-29.

Thanks for volunteering 'Stangs.  No doubt, Hope-link and Together Center clients will remember you when they put up their trees!

VIDEO UPDATE: Mustang Boys defeat Lake Stevens to take 5th in State!

Fifteen buses carried 750 SuperFans to the Tacoma Dome to root for their District winning Redmond Mustangs game against #1 seed, Federal Way HS. Redmond's SuperFans were perhaps the largest, loudest, and most synchronized H.S. fans in the State, EVER. Coach Larsen thanked the SuperFans repeatedly for their support.

Redmond drew Federal Way H.S. in the first round - the team that went on to defeat the Garfield Bulldogs to win the State tournament. (Factoid: during the regular season Redmond lost to Garfield in double overtime). But, Redmond went on to defeat Beamer, Mariner and Lake Stevens to take 5th Place in State! The Lake Stevens game went into double overtime. Read the Seattle Times (3/7) story here. Mustang Chris Harrington was awarded "2nd Team All-State" honors.

Below are a series of video clips of their first game against tournament winning Federal Way H.S., the second game vs. Beamer and final game vs. Lake Stevens. Courtney Martin - Redmond High Girls Basketball Record-breaker

Update, 5/7/09 - Courtney signs with Western Oregon University.
Update: Courtney was recently named 1st Team KingCo 4a

Courtney only played 66 games throughout her Sophomore, Junior and Senior seasons. Yet, she set four new high school foul-shooting records, as posted on the Mustang Girls website. Had Courtney played the average number of games (78) in her three Varsity years as a Mustang, she would have the momentum to set 10 new records.

View the following spreadsheet link to see how Courtney (66 games) would have ranked when adjusting for games played as compared to players Ashbaugh (80 games), Flynn (80 games), Campbell (84 games), Edwards (73 games), and Graham (85 games). Courtney had momentum to achieve the most Career Points Per Game at 15.4 points. Click on the spreadsheet to see all six records Courtney could have made when adjusted for games played. "

30 second video clip of: Courtney Martin's classic move under the basket; Captain Alicia Valentine's trademark stealth steal at half-court. (2/8/08 Ballard game).

Caveat: "Minutes played per game" are not tracked by RHS so any adjustments for playing time in a game couldn't be made. "Team strength" and any plaguing injuries could not be factored into Courtney's pro forma stats.

An act of sportsmanship in Washington State heard round the world!

A 2 minute video is posted HERE.
By the time you read this incredible story, it will have probably been on national news. The above photo of heroic Central Washington University softball players speaks for itself. For the complete story read the article in The Oregonian, 4/30/08. (patience)
My neighbor Larry told me about this tear-jerker this afternoon. I couldn't believe it. My heart melted and eyes moistened as he told the story. It's about sportsmanship. It's in the New York Times and hundreds of blogs across the country.
If you look at the list of sports teams on my blog in Redmond (see sidebar) it's clear many, many Redmond players and coaches will by touched by this story. Just think how many times Redmond coaches and parents try to instill "good sportsmanship" and character in their children. Now, they have it!
I know two Redmond basketball coaches who went to Central Washington University. Mustang Girls Basketball Coach and FLIGHT President, Dennis Edwards played football under Central's present softball coach Gary Frederick. My daughter's FLIGHT coach, Jenny Jammerman played at Central, too. Do you know anyone?

Teenager Mike Ellis officiates 5 high school sports - his story!

While watching my daughter's basketball games I met Mike Ellis, a young official. I was impressed with his love of officiating and curious as to what drew him to it. Mike officiates 5 school sports! It takes a special person with unique skill sets and sturdy self-esteem to be a good official. I tried it once. Not for me. Mike wrote the following story about his job:

"My name is Mike Ellis. I am currently a student at Bellevue Community College and officiating is my income. People constantly ask me how some one my age (18) can handle coaches and fans in such high stressed games. Well, simple for me: its just a game, I'm out there to have fun and give back to the players and community. Most of the comments I find funny and you can usually see me just laughing with a whistle in my mouth. Sure some comments bug me but its never anything that's going to effect the way I officiate. I'm there for the kids not the parents or fans.

(The lacrosse photo on the right is not of Mike. You can find his lacrosse officiating photo at the Redmond Lacrosse Club site header)
I currently officiate 4, High-school sports - Hockey, Lacrosse, Football, and Basketball - and I'm training for Volleyball. Hockey is the most difficult to officiate mainly because it is on Ice and you have to constantly think about how to get into position without falling. Hockey is also a hard hitting sport with lots of decisions based on the intent of what the players are doing -- sort of like basketball but in basketball the fouls stand out a lot more.

Lacrosse vs. Basketball: Basketball is a split second decision making process. Your whistle is in your mouth. In Lacrosse you have a few seconds....the whistle isn't in your mouth but on your fingers so you can think about the call. Lacrosse is obviously a contact sport. For me basketball is more fun to officiate since there are fewer players and you are closer to them on the court so you can joke around -- unlike lacrosse which is played on a large field similar to a soccer field. Usually only 2 officials work a lacrosse game. So, you have to cover 2X as many players as basketball and in a very big arena.

Lacrosse pays the most of the of the high school sports I officiate -- $40 for Middle School games and $70 for High School games. Sure, I could make officiating a career if I could work at the professional level -- but I could never make it by officiating high school alone. I'm majoring in business so I'm sure I can find something else to do (if I don't make it to the professional level).

I started officiating Lacrosse and Hockey four years ago (age 14). Finding time is not hard for me as I take college classes from 10:30 - 1:20pm and most games don't start till after 3pm.

The largest shortage of officials is in Lacrosse and Volleyball. (Growth of lacrosse is limited by the availability of officials, coaches, and fields -- not players). If anyone is interested in learning how to officiate lacrosse a visit to www.waloa.info is a good start. Training clinics are being organized and underway right now."

Thank you,
Mike Ellis
