Youth Climate Strike

Kirkland Mayor Penny Sweet responding to youth protesters.
The four student leaders are shown above.

At Kirkland's Marina Park on Friday, December 6th, 1:30 p.m. Four Eastside students led a peaceful "Youth Climate Strike" -- one that was taking place across the country on the same day.  (The march was on not on December 7th.) Student leaders from Lake Washington High, Bellevue High (2) and Overlake High organized the strike. After speeches to mostly adults they led the strikers carrying signs to Kirkland City Hall chanting: "hey hey! ho ho! climate change has got to go!"  Many marched It's estimated the turn-out was 30-40, Kirkland mayor Penny Sweet thanked them for bringing attention to the climate crisis and explained the city's progress towards lowering CO-2 emissions.

One of the students said another strike is planned for April or May at another location. The strike by local youth at Seattle city hall was much larger.  KOMO reported on it, including a good video of the event.

Roger Blier, Lunch Buddy and PASSPORT UNLIMITED "Silver Sponsor" has a new pirq app "to discover instant deals on the go!"

Some incredible numbers are in on the Lake Washington Schools Foundation 7th Annual "Legacy of Learning" Benefit Luncheon.   $180,000 in donations!  That's a 25% increase in giving from last year!  Awesome show of community support, for sure!  The students were there, too.  On the right is a photo of Horace Mann Elementary's "Green Team."  5th Grade teacher Marie Hartford is beaming on the right.  Thanks to the "Foundation," MANN's team got a $200 kick-start to start their "hands on" volunteer work cleaning up the stormwater wetland pond on the school's property.  Go ahead and take a peak over the huricaine fence and you may see ducks and dragonfly's or hear frogs chirp, chirp.  There used to be invasive blackberry brambles blocking the view and suffocating the wetland and wildlife stormwater pond.  Thanks to Marie's green team and their little shovels we have a cleaner Bear Creek, Sammamish River and Puget Sound!

At the foundation of  the MANN "Green Team" is our growing FOUNDATION of community supporters!  Tune in for a short clip of how the FOUNDATION is "Growing Tomorrow's Great Minds TODAY - One Child at a Time"

Special thanks to sodexo for "Making every day a better day" by providing and serving over 450 warm luncheons!

School Board approves interim construction financing for STEM, Redmond and Eastlake High Schools

Aerial update of STEM Project Site (April, 2012)
UPDATED:  The School board meeting this Monday was better attended by bond salesmen than citizens, as the board held a Hearing to approve two capital bond transactions, keeping STEM, Redmond High, and Eastlake High construction at running at full throttle.

One of the transactions, a $34 million LGO Bond sale, raised cash to cover short-term construction needs until the voter-approved "2012-2017 $65 million Capital Levy" dollars can catch up. The second board action raised $25 million from an aging  "2006 Eight-Year $436 million Capital Bond."  According to Barb Posthumus, district Business Services Manager,  a balance of $11 million remains of the original $436 million Bond.

LGO's are "Limited Government Obligation" bonds and are non-voter approved.  Read More >>

Permit Appeals push back new STEM School. Eastlake High to house STEM School til late Fall, early Winter

UPDATED:  New STEM School to be housed temporarily at Eastlake High  Permitting delays push building opening back

The Lake Washington School District’s new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) School will open in the fall of 2012 in temporary quarters at Eastlake High School. Its permanent building, to be located next to Alcott Elementary School in Redmond, will not be ready in time for the opening of school. Delays in required permits have pushed back the expected completion date of the first phase of construction of the STEM School building to late fall or early winter.

Eastlake High School's capacity with increase to 1840 students to account for the reconfiguration next fall, a new classroom wing and other building additions.  The Renaissance School will move to protable classrooms.

Based on current projections, the school will be able to accommodate the two grades (9th and 10th) the STEM School will serve in its first year. “I am disappointed that this new school will be in temporary quarters for a while,” noted Dr. Chip Kimball, superintendent, “but we are fortunate that Eastlake will be able to host it this fall. In future years, Eastlake will need that space.”  Read More >>

Brief History of Patsy Rosenbach - Redmond native and 1958 Lake Washington H.S. Grad

1955 - Football Crowd and Cheer leaders at LWHS/Credit Historical Society
An abbreviated history of the life of Patsy Rosenbach, Redmond native and Lake Washington High School graduate, class of '58.

I grew up on "Education Hill" before it was Education Hill. It was a dirt road that had huge washouts annually.  It's NE 166th AV. NE, but back then 3rd Avenue.  Redmond continues to have my loyalty. I have never lived farther than 10 miles away. I truly enjoy the fellowship at our annual “Golden Grads Reunions” of Lake Washington High School (LWHS), my alma mater. We just had our 2011 Golden Grad Reunion last month.  (Read More about it below!)  In my school days, LWHS housed students from Redmond, Kirkland, and Juanita.

A little family history: I'm the youngest graduate in my class of ‘58. I learned how to read, spell, and do arithmetic before I entered school and graduated at 16. My dad was blind and an invalid, but he taught me and my older sister before we entered school. Our older brother suffered a severe reaction to a small pox vaccination as a youngster, and had to have his books sent home with him to continue his studies.

I went to the first grade, as there was no kindergarten offered that year (the taxpayers had to vote it in and they declined that year). Three weeks later I was sent to a combined first and second grade room with Mrs. Shobert.

What did Redmond look like? Nothing like today! Read More >>

Garfield walks off the field vs. LW Kangs. Juanita Rebels crush Redmond

[This is a pretty boring video, but since the event is so outrageous, here ya go.]

While attending the high school football game at Lake Washington High School versus Garfield High on 9/2/11, we witnessed an event that none of us had ever seen before in our lives.
With 10:17 to go in the 3rd quarter, a routine dive play by Garfield resulted in a fumble with Lake Washington recovering. Garfield called a time out and pulled all their players off the field. From that point on they refused to take the field. Lake Wash. players and referees waited on the field while delay of game penalties continued to mount. Garfield's players simply stood in a long line on their sideline in protest [with locked arms]. One of Garfield's coaches walked across the field speaking forcefully to one of the referees and then walked off the field or was ejected. After about 20+ minutes, the Garfield team [forfeited and] left the field. This video captures the scene.

UPDATED: Redmond High School's DECA releases Flamingos for fundraiser

Twenty-four flamingos flocked to our yard yesterday!  By evening our grass was eaten up and creek sucked dry.  They've since departed for greener grazing!
When looking out our window in the early 'morn and all that was seen was pink, we realized our day was going to be just a little different.   Rubbing the sand from our eyes, we rushed outside, barefoot, to see what was the matter and who pulled this prank!   At first glance we were shocked!  The LANGUAGE!   Then came the LAUGHTER, the hilarity, and screams of joy!  How could we be so recognized?  So honored?  and have so much fun?  Who to thank?

An envelope taped on the back of the sign explained everything.  DECA volunteers from Redmond High School are running their "Flock-A-Friend" Fundraiser!  As the "hat passed to us" so did the joke!  Chuckling, we wrote a check to RHS hoping DECA would migrate their well-trained birds to another house; and paid extra to keep them away!  By evening the flamingos had grazed through our lawn and drank our stream dry!  So away they flew!  to an unsuspecting neighbor's lush green landscape.  Insurance anyone?  Contact DECA c/o  Morgan.Burke@yahoo.com

Teachers in China, 2008

The program is applicable for teachers of all grade levels (K-12). Those teaching subjects with components related to the understanding of China are encouraged to apply.
Since 2000, CE has sent more than 30 teachers on this trip.

Zach Klein, Conner Flain, Leslie Ellis, Jason Harrington
Redmond Mustang Boys Basketball Team Volunteer at the Swedish/Redmond:ER Open House.

Here's a picture of four Mustang Boys Basketball Team players (Zach Klein, Conner Flain, Leslie Ellis, Jason Harrington) that volunteered at the Swedish/Redmond: ER Open House on December 18.  They worked the Swedish/Redmond "Tree Maze" loading free evergreen Christmas trees donated by Swedish.   Clients from Hope-link and Redmond's  "Together Center" human services mall  received trees until 3:00 pm.  Free trees were open to the public afterwards.  It was a rainy/snowing day but the place was packed.

SEASON UPDATE:  As of this report, the Varsity Boys are off to a good start at 4-3.  The Team has a primed roster with seven juniors and three seniors. Zach (guard), Leslie (forward), Conner (forward) and Jason (g/f) are all Juniors. Most of their games have been close. They lost league games to the Redmond/Kirkland Lake Washington Kangaroos 42-47 on 12/11, and another squeaker to Skyline 37-41.  A couple nights ago the 'Stangs rolled over Ballard  71-58. Last night it was Camas 52-59.  Watch out for next year, though!  Coach Larson and 'Stangs look forward to the Seattle Prep Slalom Slam Tournament on12/27-29.

Thanks for volunteering 'Stangs.  No doubt, Hope-link and Together Center clients will remember you when they put up their trees!
