A fly-fishing sport in Redmond

Walking from the Eastside Gym over the "rusty bridge" yesterday I saw some Pike minnow fly-fishermen casting from a raft.  The fishermen were targeting their white fin.

According to Tom Hardy, City of Redmond Stream and Habitat Planner, lots of these unwanted,  Northerrn Pike minnow are swimming around Lake Sammamish and the River eating  salmon smolt and eggs. Mr. Hardy stated:  "The curious thing about Northern Pikeminnow is that they are native fish to Washington but they are voracious salmon eaters, too."  As you'll see from the video, numbers are so high in the Columbia River there's a bounty on them.  I don't think we're there yet. 😀 But it sure looks like a fun sport! The season is from May 1 to August 31.  Go for it!

Garfield walks off the field vs. LW Kangs. Juanita Rebels crush Redmond

[This is a pretty boring video, but since the event is so outrageous, here ya go.]

While attending the high school football game at Lake Washington High School versus Garfield High on 9/2/11, we witnessed an event that none of us had ever seen before in our lives.
With 10:17 to go in the 3rd quarter, a routine dive play by Garfield resulted in a fumble with Lake Washington recovering. Garfield called a time out and pulled all their players off the field. From that point on they refused to take the field. Lake Wash. players and referees waited on the field while delay of game penalties continued to mount. Garfield's players simply stood in a long line on their sideline in protest [with locked arms]. One of Garfield's coaches walked across the field speaking forcefully to one of the referees and then walked off the field or was ejected. After about 20+ minutes, the Garfield team [forfeited and] left the field. This video captures the scene.

Redmond's Ben Wobker - owner of Lake Washington Physical Therapy - "Gives Back" to Eastside community

Ben Wobker and Mandie video-tape client running on the treadmill
  during "gait analysis"
Ben and Mandie evaluate and video client walking
Ben Wobker, P.T., community leader and owner of Lake Washington Physical Therapy, performed a free "gait analysis" for 30 Eastside residents on Saturday morning.  The event was advertised on the clinic's facebook page and word of mouth.
UPDATED:  If you've been to any Redmond High School basketball, football, or cross-country sporting events you've probably heard of Ben Wobker.  Ben, the son of  Horace Mann teacher David Wobker, graduated from RHS with seven letters in Football, Cross-country and Leadership honors.   Ben is an award-winning* physical therapist and runs a successful eastside therapy business.  To me, three words describe him best: Ben Gives Back...to his community!
Ben analyzes gait with client and makes recommendations
Every year Ben councils Coach Villineuve's highly ranked Cross Country teams with free "gait analysis" and discounts on shoes. Once the co-owner of Redmond Physical Therapy, he offered free fittings and discounts on knee and ankle braces for Mustang teams. You'll also see Ben at high school career fairs and mentoring students in his clinic. But, Ben's food drive efforts with HopeLink may be his biggest community contribution. Two years ago, Ben started "March Can Madness" -- a competition between Redmond businesses -- to collect the most food from their customers for HopeLink. To this day, Ben still waives the $30 fee for missed appointments with a food donation!  Next year, Lake Washington Physical Therapy will sponsor HopeLink's "Turkey Trot" fundraiser.
After eight years service as co-owner at Redmond Physical Therapy, Ben decided to expand his brand to Kirkland. Last month he celebrated his first year as owner of Lake Washington Physical Therapy.  Already he plans to hire a 4th therapist! Mandie Majerus, PT worked with Ben for years in Redmond. Both graduated from University of Montana. (Mandie's entering the Iron man in Canada; she worked as a therapist in Antarctica for a year!)  Some trivia:  In Washington, many insurance companies don't require a physician referral to see a physical therapist.
Brooks, Mizuno, Asics track shoes fill the display windows. Ben contracted "Everyday Athlete" to sell the shoes. "Even though Kirkland's downtown vacancy was 22% last year we still had to meet "non-medical retail" zoning requirements," said Ben
*Ben Wobker was voted "2010 Best Physical Therapist" by the readers of Eastside's "425 Magazine".

The new Sammamish Rowing Association BOATHOUSE is approved.

Sammamish Rowing Association Club is on County land and is open to the Public
The Sammamish Rowing Association (SRA) is a fantastic public asset for city and county residents wishing to take up the sport. Hundreds of youth and adults take classes every year to learn how to scull and crew on beautiful Lake Sammamish.
This popular and growing sport has needed more boathouse space for its "shells". exercise equipment and operations for years. Unfortunately, land use permitting by the county and city have delayed the project for many more years!
On June 2 the City Council held a restricted, closed public hearing so SRA and an opposing citizen could explain their case. The opponent did most all of the talking as Council had to decide if they would deny the city use permit based on the citizen's complaints. Ms. Dickson lives across the street from SRA and her primary motivation was traffic and adequate parking. She also tried to make a case for environmental damage from wetland destruction.
SRA was well prepared: 1) a left hand turn lane will be installed on Lake Sammamish Blvd. My whole family rowed at SRA and we know this improvement is critical for safety. 2) at least 15 more parking spots will be installed. 3) traffic mitigation is required, including car pooling, 3) the 12,000 sf boathouse footprint remains 150 feet from the lake, 4) a smaller wetland would be upgraded to the highest level of importance and value - Category One, and 5) hazardous wastes would be self-contained. Council approved the use permit, 7 - 0. A credit to the Mayor, it was the most professional and fairest closed-record Hearing from Council I've seen in five years. But, the appeals process is unfair.
Comment: Council's land use appeal policy : The City Council's land use appeals process (read this story & "comments") is outdated and has been abandoned by almost every city around us. The Boathouse permit is a case in point, as follows: 1) Council was not allowed to walk the site or talk to anyone about the SRA project; yet, Councilman Cole informed me last week he has known Ms. Dickson for years. 2) Neither parties involved nor the community was fully heard or represented by this rigid Review. 3) The code is confusing. Ms. Dickson, the opponent, missed out in filing a "Letter of Reconsideration" to Council and lost a rare opportunity to be heard by Council. She received no representation or assistance from her elected representatives during the Review. Almost all cities leave the judging up the to the justices of county court and free Council to represent and assist their elected. Redmond Council policy is an outlier, leaving them vulnerable to law suit.

Diagrams and description of the new Boathouse: http://www.srarowing.com/newboathouse/newboathouse.aspx
This Ordinance was approved by City Council to permit the use of a new Boathouse by the Sammamish Rowing Association. This document shows a map of the project.

Redmond father & son lacrosse family invents THE LAX TIMER

When this ref's whistle blows, "the Clock" goes on auto-pilot.

My son Nolan created the http://www.laxtimer.com/ web site that we use to sell the "Lacrosse Timer" software. I'm the CEO of a local software company, Prime Recognition Corporation. Nolan's a junior on Redmond High School Varsity Lacrosse team, but has sat out this year with injuries. But prior to that he was on some all star teams including Starz.

As I mentioned, we actually give the software away to anyone in the Pacific NW, as payback for all the things that have been done for us in the 5 years Nolan's been playing. Anybody can download the software and use it for 30 days for free to see if they like it before buying it.

I wrote the software after a couple of years of doing timing the conventional way with stop watches, horns, etc. I much prefer this approach [in large part, because keeping track of multiple penalties is so much easier and less stressfull].

Regards,
Kenn Dahl

VIDEO UPDATE: Mustang Boys defeat Lake Stevens to take 5th in State!

Fifteen buses carried 750 SuperFans to the Tacoma Dome to root for their District winning Redmond Mustangs game against #1 seed, Federal Way HS. Redmond drew Federal Way H.S. in the first round - the team that went on to defeat the Garfield Bulldogs to win the State tournament. (Factoid: during the regular season Redmond lost to Garfield in double overtime). But, Redmond went on to defeat Beamer, Mariner and Lake Stevens to take 5th Place in State! The Lake Stevens game went into double overtime. Read the Seattle Times (3/7) story here. Mustang Chris Harrington was awarded "2nd Team All-State" honors.

Redmond Girls Basketball soars high with "Puget Sound Flight"

<

(Karly, Gina, Whitney, Colleen and Coach Jenny missing)

The Puget Sound Flight Girls Basketball Program (FLIGHT) recently held their annual “Flight Invite” fundraiser at Redmond High and Junior High schools. About 30 teams from all over the Puget Sound area participated - some as far away as Tacoma and Mt. Vernon. Ten teams couldn't register this year because of Spring Break conflicts.
You can watch three short video clips of 7th, 8th, and 10 grade teams at the bottom! FLIGHT started out with two teams about 8 years ago: Coach Terry Graham’s Mirage players joined up with Coach Dennis Edward’s Magic players.
Dennis has since grown the program to 11 teams of grades 5 – 11. Terry Graham now coaches the top Blue team and is the FLIGHT College Coordinator. Dennis Edwards is Director and President of FLIGHT and he also coaches the Mustang Girls Varsity (18 - 8). This year Coach Kevin Leuning is Co-Director. No way Dennis, Terry, and Kevin could “just do it” without FLIGHT’S brigade of dedicated volunteer coaches, parents and players! Yeah!

The top Blue team travels to distant tournaments scouted by colleges. This takes a lot of money. It’s anticipated about $5000 will be raised at the "Flight Invite" Gate and $1600 from the concession stand, raffle, and bottled “Flight water”. Registration fees pay for officials and gym use. Tournament photos can be viewed for free here c/o "Cutaway Photos" where a percentage of purchases are donated to the FLIGHT program.

The program has been very successful and a tremendous growth experience for the girls. My 16 year-old daughter has played since 5th grade. Teams have traveled as far as Canada, San Diego, Tennessee, Nevada, Oregon, Spokane, and Arizona! At last count, thirty-three FLIGHT graduates were awarded college scholarships, to name a few schools – Gonzaga, Brown, Yale, Sacramento State., Univ. of AZ, Pepperdine, Univ. of Denver, UCONN, UC, USC, Alaska-Anchorage, Western Washington, and on!
If you'd like to try-out for the team or want more information, contact Coach Dennis Edwards or Coach Terry Graham. Try-outs are in October. The season runs from March to July.

The FLIGHT website (here) posts coach contact information, player and team rosters, alumni, recognition of over 40 sponsors, a fundraiser for Coach Rose and on...

Mustang Varsity Girls Basketball play Roosevelt game in memory of Coach James Rose

The Mustang Girls Varsity game vs. Roosevelt was played in memory of Coach James Rose. Each player penned "JR" on their arm for the game.
Memorial service/party Sunday, Feb 10, 4-6, Inglemoor
(see www.pugetsoundflight.org for details & Flight try-out activities)

The Puget Sound Flight Basketball Club and Redmond Mustang friends are saddened to announce that James Rose, the current 6th grade Flight Blue team coach (and the current Inglemoor High School girls JV coach), a dedicated contributor to the Flight program over the last five plus years, has unexpectedly passed away at the very young age of 39. Although James did not have any kids of his own, he volunteered his time year after year in the Flight program as well as to the Inglemoor girls and boys select and High School basketball programs . He loved the game of basketball, being in the gym, being around kids, and giving his time to teach and mentor youth. It was a big part of his life...a big part of what made James happy. We are all going to miss James and miss what he meant to the Flight program, to youth basketball in the Puget Sound area, and to the hundreds of kids that he has impacted over the years. A basketball scholarship fund is being set up in James's name...if you would like to contribute, please send your checks to: Puget Sound Flight Girls Basketball Club James Rose Scholarship Fund 14206 192nd Avenue NE Woodinville, WA 98077. Please check back with us, as soon as we have information on a service or celebration of life, we will update. www.pugetsoundflight.org . Quote found on PSF website.
