UPDATED: Baccalaureate Co-Chair previews RHS PTSA Meeting

BREAKING NEWS:  I'm still waiting to hear more official results of the meeting, but I can report that a large majority vote was taken to keep the RHS-PTSA as the sponsor for Baccalaureate and to name it "Baccalaureate."  The RHS-PTSA board is yet to announce the location for Baccalaureate 2013.  Over 100 parents attended, including two State PTSA officials to help out with the voting process.  Conversations lasted for about an hour and a half before the votes were taken.  BY  9-27

Dear friends of Redmond High,

You may have heard by now that on Wednesday, September 26 at 7 pm in the RHS
PAC, the RHS PTSA is holding a special General Membership meeting to
determine the fate of Baccalaureate 2013.

As one of the co-chairs of Baccalaureate 2013, I wanted to give you a brief
preview of the issues at hand. A vocal portion of the PTSA Board of
Directors believes that Baccalaureate should be changed as follows:   READ MORE >>

OPINION: MORE BUSSES ARE NEEDED FOR REDMOND HIGH SCHOOL

"New Walk Area Boundary" is in blue. (Click to enlarge)

MORE BUSSES ARE NEEDED AT REDMOND HIGH SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS WHO WALK MORE THAN ONE MILE TO SCHOOL

By Susan Wilkins
Redmond, WA.

When Redmond High School opened this September with 2000 students and staff, only 8 busses were provided for the entire school – enough seats for about 400 students to ride to and from school.

In September, 500 additional ninth graders arrived at Redmond High as part of the 9-12 grade conversion. The brand new 14-classroom south wing and auxiliary gym were also opened for the first time.  Redmond High School is now one of the largest high schools in Washington State with almost 2000 students and 160 teachers and staff.  Before final construction plans were approved by the Redmond City Council, the project went through a series of reviews and hearings where such issues as severe traffic back-ups, noise, overcrowding in the halls and lunchroom, and even inadequate locker counts were considered.

A major issue that was raised with the city Hearing Examiner in May 2011 and at the final approval hearing held by Redmond City Council in July 2011 was the change in state law (28A.160.160 RCW) that would allow school districts to be reimbursed by the state for transporting students who had to walk more than a mile to school. Prior to the change in the law, funding for school bus transportation had been limited to students who lived outside a 1-mile radius from the school meaning that many students who had long walks to school because of steep slopes, winding roads and other geographic features were not provided bus service and instead ended up driving or being driven to school.   The State Legislature amended the 1-mile radius requirement and instead created the definition of a “1-mile walk route” meaning that any student who had to walk more than 1 mile to school would be eligible for state transportation funding.

Under the 1-mile radius rule, students living along Avondale Road, 166th Avenue NE and on the north and south sides of the NE 116th Street corridor were not eligible for school bus transportation even though most would have walked 2 to 3 miles to get to school by following the existing roadways.  With the creation of the “1-mile walk area” hundreds of RHS students became eligible for bus transportation funding from the state.  The catch is that although the state will provide funding, the local school districts are not required to provide bus transportation except to students with special needs.

Running With Dogs on the Power Line Trail

Richard holding Sadie (2008)
Republished in memory of Richard's dog, Sadie --

For the past year or so, I have been running daily with two Australian Shepherds. I have been taking care of my daugther's dog, Scooby, while she is living in the U.K. It is a learning experience for me to watch these herding dogs in action, trying their best to round up squirrels and rabbits that happen to cross our path. These are hard working dogs and love to punch a time clock. Typically, we start out around 7:00 AM, and if possible again at 5:00PM. These hard working dogs mostly sleep all day, but they keep a watch at my living room window. They let me know if any thing unusual happens to walk into our front yard. They have excellent eye sight, and a healthy bark to warn me of any out-of-the-ordinary visitors. Mostly, they know the sound of my car, and of my wife's truck, and stay quiet when we pull into our drive way. Read More >>

Mustangs Celebrate 2nd Kingco Title in Three Years

Champions
On Thursday night at Woodinville High School, the Redmond Mustangs played like champions and defeated the Issaquah Eagles 7-0 to win the Kingco Conference title.

The Mustangs were firing on all cylinders. Leading the charge offensively were Patrick McGrath, Brent Firth, and Cody Beliel. Each had two hits on the night. Beliel scored two runs. Firth drove in three runs. And, McGrath scored two while driving in two.

On the mound, Adam Cline didn't disappoint as he tossed a complete game shutout. Cline, however, didn't do it alone as he had the help of some outstanding defense. No play was more impressive than senior Peyton Lutz robbing a homerun in leftfield in the 4th inning.

Redmond now heads into the state tournament as the 1 seed from Kingco. The first game is Saturday, May 19th at 1 pm at Kent Memorial Stadium. Be there to root on your Mustangs.  Directions

UPDATED: Redmond Mustangs defeat Newport, On To State

Hot Bats and a Dominant Pitching Lead to a 9-1 Win /
JILL FLYNN
On To State

Plays Issaquah this Thursday for Kingco title game.

Wins for the 14th time in 15 games since a 0-7 record at start of season

From the opening bell, the Redmond Mustangs were ready to go, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. The big blows came off the bats of a pair of sophomores, Lucas Eliason and Kyle Francis. Eliason lined a two run double down the right-field line while Francis drove a triple in the right-center gap for three RBI of his own. Of the 12 total hits off Mustang bats, senior Patrick McGrath had three, one a two run bomb to left.

That first inning run production was more than enough for starter Peter Hendron. The power-pitching righthander only gave up one hit on the day, a solo homerun to Nate Anderson. The performance by Hendron and the hot bats send the Mustangs off to the state regionals on May 19th.

Redmond Mustangs gutted out Woodinville in first round of Kingco Playoffs

A Total Team Effort Leads Redmond to a Win/ JILL FLYNN
  Kingco Playoff Time

The Redmond Mustangs gutted out a 3-2 win over the Woodinville Falcons in the first round of the Kingco playoffs on Saturday morning.

The win was due in large part to the effort of senior pitcher, Adam Cline. The crafty right-hander held the Falcon bats to only three hits on the day. Offensively, junior Brent Firth hit a monster blast over the right-centerfield fence for a solo homerun in the 2nd inning. And, senior Patrick McGrath came up clutch driving in the other two runs, the game winner on a two out, two strike pitch in the 5th inning.

The win puts the Mustangs one game away from the state tournament. Standing in their way is division rival, Newport. The game is Monday at 4 pm at Woodinville High School.  Be there.

100 year-old bell has a new home at Redmond High thanks to Scout Logan John

Ceremony for 100 year old Clise Family Bell planned for April 18
at Redmond High School .  The bell weighs 1100 pounds.

Installation ceremony for the Clise "touchdown" bell at Redmond High is planned for Redmond's 100 year Anniversary on April 18.

History:  Anna Clise was the founder of Seattle Children's Hospital and owned Marymoor. She donated the land for the city's oldest park, Anderson Park. Anna commissioned the bell in 1912.

By Amy John, Redmond resident
March 18, 2012

On Wednesday, April 18th at 2:00 at the Redmond High School football field there will be a Ceremony marking the completion of the new home for the 100 year old Clise Family Redmond Bell.  My son, Logan John, planned this project for his Eagle Scout leadership project.

Some notables at the event will be the Mayor, who will briefly speak, and Mr. Al Clise, the great grandson of Anna Clise, who commissioned this bell.  Anna Clise was the founder of Seattle Children's and owned Marymoor. She donated the land that is now Anderson Park. The Historical Society is also going to speak to give a history of the bell.

The Redmond High football boosters contacted our Troop 612 about this project. The bell had been sitting over by the fence on the ground since the football field was replaced years ago. It's new home is by the outside fence near the new concession stand, just outside the track closest to the road (104th). If you ride by that way, take a look over and you'll see it, and hear it at games!  Read More >>

Principal Jane Todd: preparations underway for Reconfiguration at Redmond High

Principal Jane Todd presents to the School Board
Dear Parents:
I have been having what I think are Reconfiguration dreams. I'll spare you the details, but they are dreams in which I lose something I value (I find it again), I lose my patience, I lose my bearings and I get lost. And sometimes, in the way of dreams, things don't make much sense. However, and this is the important part: All the way along in those dreams, there have been people there to help me - people to pay my way, people to help me find what I had lost, people to get me home. And I wake up smiling. I hope that will be as comforting to you as it has to me.

To update you on some Reconfiguration doings:  Read More >>

School Board should consider Jane Todd for Superintendent

Jane Todd speaking from District podium, 2009
OPINION:  The Redmond Reporter's January 6 article: "Community invited to meet LWSD superintendent candidate” is misleading.  They write that: "Pierce will replace Dr. Chip Kimball, who is leaving to take a school superintendent position in Singapore."  District Director Kathryn Reith's  press release is the source of this mis-information.  The school board hasn't decided to replace Dr. Kimball with Dr.Traci Pierce. They prefer Traci Pierce and are open to feedback and candidate suggestions from the community.  On December 6, when I asked for clarification, Communications Director Ms. Reith wrote:

"The board did not hire Traci. It stated that she is their preferred candidate. She will go through a process of being introduced to the community (meet and greets) and the board will solicit feedback. The board could after that feedback decide not to hire Traci. If that is their decision, they could indeed look at other internal candidates or external candidates."
I commend the school board on engaging the community in this critical decision requiring their vote. Leaving their decision open to community feedback is a wise and thoughtful action. I have attended many school board meetings and work sessions and have seen Traci in action. She's excellent and a good fit with the Board. I don't know who could replace her.

As Traci makes her rounds, I am thrilled parents are getting a glimpse of Jane Todd's LEADERSHIP skills during school "Town Meetings" on configuration. Jane Todd is a skilled and admired LWSD principal with experience leading Juanita High and RHS administrations. Some may say she is the “people’s choice.” Administrator Todd is a leader in a time when we need leadership the most. And, who can possibly replace Traci Pierce as Deputy Superintendent of School Support. It’s a massive job. The School Board should take a second look at their “preferred.” In these times, LWSD needs a leader.

The School Board is asking for your feedback and candidate suggestions  Write them by February 6 to Board@lwsd.org.

LWSD Administrator Jane Todd holds Town Hall Meeting at Evergreen Junior High

RHS Principal Jane Todd at the podium w/ associates
addressing the LWSD Board, 2009.  Her speech topic:
"Building culture at RHS"
from the desk of  RHS District Principal Jane Todd to the Redmond High Community...

I had the pleasure of meeting with all the 8th and 9th graders at Evergreen Junior High School a couple
of weeks ago (don't worry, RJHS, your turn will come in early 2012.) Other administrators from both
EHS and RHS participated with me in a Town Meeting format. I have to first tell you I was absolutely
charmed by all their questions, but my favorite was: Student: "So, tell me about the parking lot
situation at Redmond High." Me: (after a significant pause in which I tried to determine the seriousness of the question) "Well, if you can drive - with a license to do so - you can get a parking pass." The student was in the 8th grade. Never let it be said these students do not plan ahead.

At the end of each session, we were asked by Jan Olson, Principal at EJHS, to give one piece of advice
that students could act on now. Mine was, "Reflect on who you are, what you have done to date to
meet the goals you have for yourself and what changes you may need to make for the future because
you will have a fresh start next fall." I went on to mention that there are only a few times in our lives
when we have the opportunity to start over with a fresh slate. Read More >>

OPINION: Redmond High School Expansion costs $18,600,000 - Adds Only 14 Classrooms

RHS Expansion:  14 classrooms, 4 portables, small gym, staff parking
$18,600,000 REDMOND HIGH SCHOOL EXPANSION - Each Classroom costs one million dollars,  By Susan Wilkins

OPINION:  Everybody remember the dire warnings last January before the Lake Washington School District special election? If we didn’t approve the $65 million levy for additional classroom space then our schools will be so overcrowded that there would be double shifting at the high schools and portable classrooms!

The levy was approved in the February 8, 2011 election and the school district started plans to build the new schools right away. The election mailings sent out by the district projected that enrollment would increase from 24,500 to 27,000 in just a few years.

After the predictions of exploding student population growth and overcrowding, the Redmond High School Expansion will add only a small gym and 14 classrooms to the school: 11 classrooms, 2 science labs and 1 art room. At maximum capacity, that’s enough additional space for 448 students.  READ MORE >>

Redmond High Principal Todd writes parents about the power of community in addressing drug abuse

Principal Jane Todd, Redmond HS writes in the November issue of the "Mustang Messenger"

"....I know the world has changed.  As an example, as I write this, on October 31, 2011, we are projected to reach 7 billion people worldwide today. In the 60's, the world population was 2 billion. But I also know that people are pretty much the same, albeit a bit more harried. I experienced the power of community growing up, but I have also experienced the power of community time after time as an adult.  Read More >>
