The Redmond retail post office on 85th St has moved. What are your options?

Autumn photo of "fallen" post office
Many residents still don't know that the Redmond postal service has moved their retail operations on 85th Street to their parcel drop-off distribution center in Southeast Redmond at *7241 185th Ave. NE.   They moved July 28.

The Redmond Reporter (RR) published two good stories on this.

In the Reporter's first story,  Mayor Marchione said "for the USPS to leave downtown at a time when the downtown core is growing makes no sense."   According to the RR, The USPS left mostly for financial reasons

The Redmond postmaster has attended multiple Chamber of Commerce meetings over the years and their financial constraints and relocation options were available.  The City Council is a Member of the Chamber with Councilmembers Cole and Vache' held Trustee positions during the Postmaster's participation.

Here is a list of retail post offices in or close to Redmond where you can mail insured letters, returned receipts, buy stamps, etc.  Some grocery stores also sell stamps.  USPS Parcel pick-up remains exclusively in the SE Redmond post office.  (Find map and my story here.)

One reader recommends the Post office at Bartell's in Bridle Trails Shopping Center.  (see comments). Bella Bottega shopping center in the QFC lot has drop box for letters.

Weekly BNI "referral meetings" gives boost to small business

Julia Anderson, Physical Therapist is smiling after the Friday's BNI
referral meeting / Painting contractor JC is signing new members
UPDATED:  Small businesses are working hard to stay connected in this economy to keep their Redmond customer referral base healthy.  Nat Seymour, invited me to his weekly  Redmond BNI "referral meeting" this Friday at Redmond's Family Pancake House.  The banquet room was alive with BNI chatter as members caught up from the week before and met the new visitors.

Two other BNI Groups meet in Redmond at different times and locations.

45 is the magic number for BNI small business members.  I was prepared to give a 45 minute talk about my exciting new neighborhood consulting business plan, only to hear the gong off after my second swallow of coffee.  Table talks must have circled 3-4 times, not counting two 8-minute presentations.  Read More >>

Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission approves electric and natural gas rate hikes.

 PGE
The Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission orders Puget Sound Energy (PSE) to raise electric rates by 3.2 % and natural gas prices by 1.3%.   The rates are significantly less than originally requested by PSE.  The new rates will take effect on May 14.
PGE originally requested an 8.1 percent increase for electric service and 3.0 percent increase for natural gas service.
The commission also approved an increase of about 30 percent in contributions to PSE’s residential electric low-income assistance program. Customer contributions to the program will increase from $.59 to $.76 a month, beginning May 14.

Chair of Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce updates community on "One Redmond"

“One Redmond” FAQ's - edition #1
-By Bob Hale, Meagan Walker and Andrea Lachmann
April, 2012, Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce Newsletter

Andrea Lachmann, Chair GRCC

Andrea Lachmann, the Chair of the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) board of trustees, has had a voice and a seat at the One Redmond table.  As promised in last month’s Chamber Newsletter Andrea is committed to updating the membership on the latest and greatest One Redmond news:

Q:  What is One Redmond and how did the idea come about?

Lachmann: The concept grew out of the awareness that there were three organizations working on behalf of Redmond residents, employees, and businesses to help improve the social and economic landscape of our community.
  • Our focus at the Chamber is on helping the businesses to prosper.
  • The Redmond Economic Development Alliance was established to recruit and retain new industries
  • Realize Redmond is dedicated to supporting community projects, programs and special events.
We were finding that not only did many of our objectives overlap, but we were also competing for some of the same financial resources. We decided that it was worth pursuing the idea of consolidating our efforts and resources.

Q: What is the vision for One Redmond?  Read More >>

'Sustainable Redmond' Files Petition with Superior Court on Group Health Clear-cut Decision

Sustainable Redmond Files Land Use Petition

Redmond, WA – On January 24, Citizens and Neighbors for a Sustainable Redmond filed a land use petition in King County Superior Court, seeking review of the City of Redmond’s decision to approve Group Health’s request to clear cut a 28-acre urban forest within the Overlake neighborhood so as to facilitate the development of a master planned mixed use development. This includes 65 landmark trees, estimated to be 150 to 250 years old, and 985 significant trees, up to 150 years old. Sustainable Redmond was joined in the appeal by Friends at Overlake Village, Villa Marina Condominium Association, and Rosemarie Ives, former mayor of Redmond, 1992-2007. In support of the appeal are the Eastside Audubon Society, Sherwood Forest Community Club (a nearby Bellevue neighborhood), and Techies for Trees (workers in the Overlake neighborhood).

Members from Sustainable Redmond, along with many local citizens and several groups, had urged the Council to reconsider the Group Health Overlake Village development agreement at public hearings in November and December. On December 13, the City Council approved, 6 to 1, the Group Health Overlake Village Master Plan and Development Agreement, with councilmember Allen dissenting.

Chamber question: What role should the city have in economic development? By Sue Stewart, Pos 7

Chamber question: What role should the city have in economic development? Elect Sue Stewart:

This is the second post in a series covering the four questions from the recent City of Redmond Chamber of Commerce candidate forum.

Question: What role should the city have in the economic development?

The City must continue to provide ample infrastructure such as accomodations for transit, utilities and completing and enhancing its network of roads and sidewalks. The changes coming to downtown have started in earnest, like the connection of 161st NE between Redmond Way and Cleveland Street. The next step will include returning Redmond Way and Cleveland to two-way. Combine these improvements with replacing missing sidewalks and working with METRO to bring about the service that connects us both inside and outside our community, and we will maintain our role as an Eastside transportation hub. Who's a good "write-in" candidate for Evergreen Hospital Commissioner, Position #3

Evergreen Commissioner  Kempf
RNB responds to an engaged hospital district citizen who emailed for a "write-in" alternative to Commissioner Kempf.   (for background on Kempf visit this post)

OPINION:   RNB can't name a specific "write-in" challenger to Evergreen Commissioner Kempf, Position #3, though Reader recommendations can be posted in the comments section.

My ideal candidate has financial skill-sets, is passionate and knowledgeable about Evergreen Healthcare, responsible and accountable to the taxpayer, desires a community hospital rather than one built around specialists, encourages Open Government wherein meetings are video-taped (as is Valley Hospital, Renton), allocates 60% levy monies to community health and wellness and 40% or less for growth and debt service, and is strong enough to challenge the Administration appropriately and catalyze the five-member Board from "cheerleaders" to governors.

I'm not certain if it's realistic a qualified write-in will rise at this late date, but terms are 6-years so elections occur with regularity.  Candidates are currently spawned but the "Evergreen Advisers". "I talked to a prominent Redmond business person and Advisor.  She said if "you had one problem or issue with Evergreen you wouldn't qualify for the program."   Evergreen governance and community system appears "inward," clubby and close-minded.   A commissioner attends Advisor meetings once a month, but Advisors never attend public commission meetings to give input.  Since I've been covering Evergreen, they replaced the Advisor staff member with Laurene Burton, Administrative Director, Community Affairs and Governance (and executive secretary to the CEO.)  Ms. Burton is also the Public Records Officer, professional and cordial.  She takes Public Records requests by email and screens Board emails.

Some background:   Evergreen has a strong influence over the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce over the years.  Mr. Kempf  has been the Chamber Membership Chair for years. An executive from Redmond's Columbia Bank was past-President and a lauded Evergreen Advisor.  A senior executive from Evergreen is current President.  Dr. Appleton, Evergreen ER Assist. Director and past Redmond councilman ran for office against Mayor Ives. He left Evergreen last year for the V.A Medical Center.  Our Chamber of Commerce has lost significant membership since Kempf took over and is currently repositioning under One Redmond.

I hope district citizens are encouraged to run for election.  For Kempf's position (No 3)  the candidate must live in Redmond or Sammamish.

Opinion By Bob Yoder
Editor, RNB

Note:  Commissioner Jeanette Greenfield's position (No 5) is "at large" and a candidate may reside anywhere in the hospital district. Ms. Greenfield is the sole commissioner on the Levy Standing Committee.  She's an operations specialist for U.S. Bank.

Redmond Chamber's City Candidate Forum is on TV and on video 24/7.

Ballot Drop-Box at City Hall
Seven candidates for City Council and the Mayor's seat participated in a Candidate Forum on September 21st.  It was sponsored by the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce.  Topics included strategies on increasing activity in downtown, positions related to various transportation issues and candidates’ priorities.

The contested races are: Incumbent David Carson (Pos. 7) vs. Challenger Sue Stewart (Pos. 7); Tom Flynn (Pos. 5) vs. Joel Wright (Pos. 5).   Mayor Marchione and Councilmembers Hank Myers and Hank Margeson are running unopposed.    To see how the council candidates are rated visit this "Municipal League of King County" Redmond candidate site.

The City of Redmond taped the Forum for Redmond City Television Channels 21 (Comcast) and 34 (Frontier FIOS).  TV replays will begin at 9pm, Monday, October 3 and run through the election on Tuesday, November 8th.

The program is also available on demand 24/7 at the City’s website here.

The Redmond Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event as part of their monthly membership luncheon series.  Chamber Chair Tim Martin, an Evergreen Hospital executive, moderated the candidate panel.  The Forum was held at Matt's Rotisserie Bar and Grill in Redmond Town Center.

Chair Tom Martin clarifies plans for the future of Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce

Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce

from the desk of Tom Martin, Board Chair, Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce (GRCC)...

You may or not read the blog written by Bob Yoder. Today he claimed that as board chair, I said the chamber would be closing its doors by end of year.

This is not the case. I want to take this opportunity to say he has misinterpreted a presentation that was made to the Redmond city council on August 30. At that presentation, I along with Dan Agellar from the Realize Redmond foundation, Bill Biggs from the Redmond Economic Development Alliance spoke about our united effort to make Redmond a great place to live, work and play.  Read More >>

UPDATED OPINION: Redmond Chamber President announces desire to consolidate services, possible closure anticipated

Chamber President Tom Martin
UPDATED OPINION:  Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce President Tom Martin announces desire to consolidate services with Redmond's Economic Development Partnership (REDA) and Realize Redmond.

Possible closure, as we know it, is anticipated.

Updated, 9/10:  Chamber President Tom Martin, Evergreen Hospital executive, summarized the Chamber's situation during an October 30, City Council "study session":
"Membership declined to 350** from 520-530 about four years ago; so one of our presenting problems is declining membership. The decline is both the function of the economic times and function of the relevance of the chamber...the mission we historically have had.
The question we continue to ask ourselves is how do we retain and create relevance for our membership? [August Kempf, Evergreen Public Hospital Commissioner, is the Membership Chair]. Our mission is around vitality for the business of the City of Redmond and focused on: 1) advocacy at the city, county, and state level and 2) creation of networking events.

Last January we sat down to talk to John [mayor] about how to coordinate fundraising activities [and participate with "Redmond Economic Development Association" (REDA) and "Realize Redmond" in a common vision.]  With a bit of stress from our Executive Director vacancy and declining membership and the request to hold off on fundraising... we look for consolidation and coordinating fundraising activities. We support the common vision.
Martin cited a local model similar to the Redmond study IE.  Everett-South Snohomish Chamber and Snohomish County Economic Development Alliance merged into one economic development alliance.

Bill Biggs, Chair of REDA (affiliated with Group Health) said at the August 30 meeting, "we may look at structuring ourselves differently on the basis of the study...because people who invest expect to see no waste and enhanced alignment."

Incumbent Councilmember David Carson said, "250 chambers have..closed their doors in the last three years."  In response to a question from Carson, Biggs said REDA and the Chamber "may not need two executives to drive forward."

Mayor Marchione expects completion of the consultant study in two weeks and urges an October 30 deadline for action.  Councilmember Pat Vache', a Trustee of the Chamber and Director of REDA concluded, "the community" is the driving force to consolidate.   Formal announcement of the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce possible closure (as we know it) is anticipated by the end of this year.

**Tom Martin informed me today (9/14) Chamber membership is 450 not 350. Mr. Martin quoted 350 members in his August 30 Council presentation.

OPINION: Realize Redmond, REDA and the Chamber are reshuffling into a winning hand.

The humble beginnings (and end?) of the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce
UPDATED OPINION:  "One Redmond Partnership".  "Community of Excellence".  "Redmond Economic Development Association (REDA)."  "The Chamber."  "Redmond Foundation."  "Realize Redmond."  "Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC)."

What does all this mean?  To simplify, let's just call the jargon "cards in the deck." and name the game, "One Redmond" - our economic development partnership.

The game started in March of 2010 when council funded $200,000 to create a public-private "economic development partnership" to attract and sustain business. An additional $50,000 was funded to start Realize Redmond - a nonprofit designed to build private support for community projects -- to enhance and define our culture, build community, revitalize our businesses, and promote tourism.  This community ("of excellence") includes in the mix: our schools (Dr. Kimball) and health & wellness organizations.

In the beginning REDA, the Chamber, Realize Redmond (RR) and the City weren't coordinated and playing "out of  the same deck" during fundraising.  This confused the donors, sponsors and community.  So, the mayor hired a consultant ($40,000) to seek alignment and coordination of these organizations.  According to Marchione, the study will be done in two weeks.  Re-alignments could be announced at that time.  It's possible the Chambers will close their doors, eventually.

If you saw the August 30 Redmond city council meeting, you'd have heard presentations from Bill Biggs of Group Heath,  Tom Martin of Evergreen, and Dan Angellar of the Marriot-Redmond.  They are "One Redmond Partnership"  leaders of REDA, Chambers, and RR, respectively.  The Mayor ran the meeting while council looked on.

Bill Biggs, Chair of REDA led the discussion saying, "This is going to take an interdependent effort to get it done."  He said "we need to enhance our alignment, reduce waste, be a lean organization, with a cost effective overhead structure".   He spoke of  Redmond Chamber's role in keeping Redmond businesses vital and to be able to retain themselves and the RR value of community.  Biggs summarized the consultant's work saying 60 people were interviewed, not counting the Boards of REDA, Chamber, and RR.  "It created an awareness to a broad group of people."  Biggs stated:
"Historically, the way we have been organized is probably not what we will be, eventually.  We may or may not be the kind of independent Chamber or the kind of independent RR....we may look at structuring ourselves differently on the basis of the study...because people who invest expect to see no waste and enhanced alignment"
Tom Martin, President of the Redmond Chamber made an unexpected "fold em" announcement, as follows:  Read More >>

Council trying to shift gears on Redmond Economic Development Plan

Redmond's economic development plan, coined "Community of Excellence Project", underwent serious study during Council's July 12 meeting.  Several councilmembers appeared frustrated by the lack of progress and lack of background information on the plan.  Council Vice President and REDA member, Pat Vache' tried his best to explain the problem and offer solutions.

The "Community of Excellence Project" is referred to in city documents as:
  • a "complete Live, Work, Play and Learn community....of diverse businesses, quality schools, state-of-the-art healthcare, gate way ports to the world economy, commitment to environment sustainability and excellent quality of life..."
  • the Project is a collaborative effort between the City, "Realize Redmond", the Chamber and "Redmond Economic Development. Alliance" (REDA)
The Project envisioned the intent to "leverage the strengths of each organization, clarify roles, and reduce duplication of efforts and energize."   But, Council admitted this wasn't happening.  They proposed a revised working statement, called "One Redmond Initiative".   Read More >>

Who's behind the Redmond Chamber of Commerce? And what are they doing?

UPDATED:  The Redmond Chamber of Commerce is participating in a 'feasibility study' with two city funded, public-private partnerships.  The goal is to coordinate business development fund-raising.   The Chamber also appears to be working on a membership drive. Their Board of Trustee membership is listed below.

The Redmond Chamber of Commerce attracts organizations from cities outside of Redmond and so is named the "Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce."  A few of  the major outside members are:  Evergreenhealthcare (Kirkland), Puget Sound Energy (Bellevue), Reporter Newspapers (Kent), and *Allied Waste (Lynnwood).  The following  is an excerpt from a Redmond chamber newsletter:   Read More >>

Visit the new Redmond Citizen Corps Council (RCCC) site!

With the November winds, downpours and flooding already upon us, thoughts are turning to "emergency preparedness" for our families, neighbors, and businesses.

During this week's Council meeting, a citizen asked Council for assurances that fire department resources would be secure for the "Community Emergency Response Team" (C.E.R.T.) program.  In addition, during yesterday's Redmond Chamber of Commerce Meeting, Evergreen CEO Bob Malte announced an Evegreen Hospital  "emergency preparedness" program.

The city works with the "Redmond Citizen Corps Council" (RCCC) to bundle emergency services under the RCCC website.   RCCC's mission is:
"to harness the power of every individual through education, training and volunteer service to make communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues and disasters of all kinds."
The Redmond Citizen Corps Council (RCCC) creates the following emergency response volunteer opportunities:
  • C.E.R.T. training - contact Janeen Olson for the next class at jrolson@redmond.gov
