Updated: Redmond Lies On The Ancestral Lands Of The "Coast Salish Peoples"

amnh.org

"We acknowledge that we are on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who continue to steward these lands and waters as they have since time immemorial. We recognize Washington’s tribal and Indigenous or Native organizations, which actively create, shape, and contribute to our thriving communities. The Redmond Historical Society is committed to doing our part to engage with, and amplify the voices of, Native peoples and tribes."

  1. Thank you for posting this. When I ran for city council, one of the first things I did was look for information about the first residents of Redmond. I was sad it was so hard to find, and even harder to find evidence of any of their descendants that still live in Redmond. I have always wanted to take the time to go back and do more research.

  2. I love our indigenous Indians and how they cared for their land. There's a link to a Seattle museum that could be an excellent resource for you.

    Hi Mr. Yoder,

Thank you for your question. Our Eastside Native American Education Program (ENAEP) typically hosts a Pow Wow and Veterans event in the fall. Is that what you are referring to? If so, the coordinator, Mary Wilber, is out of the office until September 1, but I will check in with her when she returns to find out the date for this year's event. You can learn more about ENAEP on our website here: https://www.lwsd.org/programs-and-services/academic-support/native-american-education-program, or on the program website here: https://mwilber0.wixsite.com/eastside-ndn-ed.

    Sincerely,
    Shannon

  7. I'm surprised no one for the Historical Society or Council attended the pow wow, especially since 4 council openly acknowledged Coast Salish presence in Redmond from ancient times to the present. Before meetings council reminded the audience the Coast Salish dwelled on Redmond lands. CM Varisha Kahn started the tradition.
