UPDATED: Dr. Traci Pierce, who will take over as Lake Washington School District superintendent on July 1, announced the district’s Central Leadership Team (CLT) for the 2012-13 school year. The new structure and any changes in position will take effect on July 1. Her annoucemement was made by email to the entire LWSD staff on May 4.
Dr. Pierce said, “The CLT is comprised of administrators who work to support students, staff, families, buildings and programs in our district.” She went on to describe the CLT structure as designed to support the strategic work of the district; to align and integrate work functions; and to strengthen team cohesiveness and opportunities for collaboration.
For 2012-13, there will be three divisions within the CLT: · Operational Services· Student and School Support Services· Student and Professional Learning Services. Dr. Pierce described the changes to the structure as having several purposes, including strengthening professional learning support systems. Professional development for staff has been cut back in past budget cuts.
This new structure also integrates technology into student and professional learning functions, to provide better instruction. There is also a new emphasis on intervention programs, creating a new position to focus on those efforts. Operational Services will continue to be led by Deputy Superintendent Janene Fogard. This area includes business services (Barb Posthumous), facilities and transportation (Forest Miller), communications (Kathryn Reith) and human resources. Technology operations moves into this division.
Student and School Support Services will be led by Assistant Superintendent Heather Sinclair, who currently serves as the director of school support for the Juanita Learning Community. (The district is divided into four learning communities, one for each of the four comprehensive high schools.) This division is made up of the directors of school support who work directly with principals in support of their schools as well as the special education director and assistant directors, who lead the special education efforts in the schools. Dale Cote, principal of Meadowdale High School in Edmonds, returns to Lake Washington School District to fill the director of school support for the Juanita Learning Community position. He was previously assistant principal at Kirkland Junior High and Lake Washington High School.
Assistant Superintendent Matt Manobianco, currently the director of curriculum & standards, will lead the Student and Professional Learning Services division. He will oversee the curriculum, assessment and professional development areas. Kelly Pease, currently director of school support for the Redmond Learning Community, will take on a new role as Director of Intervention programs. This position brings a focus on district programs such as safety net, English Language Learner and other support programs for students. The technology integration staff will also be part of this division.
Jon Holmen, currently a special education coordinator, moves into Ms. Pease’s Director of Redmond School Support position for next year. Headquarters for CLT (Central Office) are in Redmond Town Center adjacent the Saturday Market parking area.
Dr. Pierce noted that this new organization of the CLT maintains budget neutrality: there were no additional funds needed for 2012-13 for this new structure when compared to the current structure.
John Holmen was one of three finalists for Superintendent of Olympic School District this year. Kathryn Reith wears several hats as Director of Communications -- Media and Public Relations and Public Records Officer. John Vaille was Assistent Superintendent of Techonology under Chip Kimball. He moved on to a new position with Puget Sound Educational Service District (Renton). An interim techonology director is filling the hole under Fogard. (see comments for Ms. Reith's remarks.)
The Strategic Advisory Leadership Team (SALT) is comprised of representative members of the District Leadership Team (DLT), including building administrators, professional-technical managers, and CLT members. I'm not sure if the public has ever been invited to their meetings or knows what they do.

Bob - You mention Dr. John Vaille's absence in next year's leadership chart. He is leaving the district for a new role as Assistant Superintendent/Chief Technology Officer for the Puget Sound Educational Services District, the regional educational agency that serves the 35 school districts in our region. We will miss him but fortunately he is not going far.
