UPDATED OPINION: Lake Washington School District Making Big Strides Forward

OPINION (UPDATED):    The Lake Washington School Board significantly improved their governance process from the last year and the Administration is playing a large role toward that end.

From the 18+ board meetings I've observed in recent years, there's no comparison in their quality of work this year from past.  This year, the Sup. functions more often as resource; and Board members are participating, communicating, sharing and brainstorming during meetings.  They appear more engaged and more articulate and thoughtful with each other and staff.

In last year's "work sessions" the Board's work was dominated by the Administration; conversation was infrequent and directed by staff.  A Director of Curriculum was the most frequent speaker and would drone on with his data.  Click the blue link to "Read More" >>

At least three highly paid executives would sit across from the board, their sole purpose to listen, and above all else refrain from any conversation whatsoever with the Board.   Work Sessions often appeared prep work for the Regular meeting and social time over a catered dinner.   Regular Meetings were informal and with most substantive discussions chosen and conducted by the Administration.  Board members had little choice in topics and rarely maintained a stream of conversation.  Pres. Pendergrass usually dominated the board's participation with the Sup.

When you fast forward to the April and May meetings of this year, everything is refreshingly different.  Look at the last two meeting tapes.  You'll see board member conversations are more dynamic, fluid, spontaneous and  productive.  Work sessions (untelevised) are much improved.  The Sup. is now suggesting rather than deciding and scheduling topics for discussion.  Technically-focused curriculum presentations and various others are delivered by Deputy Superintendent Traci Pierce.  Superintendent Pierce's practical, school-focused presentations bring out the best in our Board.  The "sitting executives" are removed and sent home.  Dr. Kimball is less burdened, more relaxed  with less pull on the reins, while the Board goes about their job -- fostering and improving the education of our children (and Sup. oversite).

The Board working harder in "Linkage" sessions to focus on segments of the district and parents needing attention.  They recently held a facilitated Linkage for all 4th Grade parents.  About 25 parents attended.  (Next story).  There's still  work to be done. (Another story).  But, for now, KUDOS to our Board and Administration on their governance improvements and adjustments to the severe challenges of our times.
