COMMUNICATIVE INTENT: WHAT ARE WE REALLY SAYING?

We all have positive and negative means to regulate our behavior that can impact how others think about us. So often we hear about our children’s challenging and negative behaviors and how they are impacting others at school and in the community at large. This constant feedback about how their actions are interfering with his/her (or the classroom’s) learning lends itself to more anxiety as we try to find ways to extinguish these troubling issues. While there is truth in this scenario, it does not tell the whole story and the tone of the messages can be hurtful and keeps children, families and educators focused on consequences.

Learn to take the mystery out of why a child engages in a certain behavior by understanding the purpose of that behavior. Discover the role communication plays in understanding children’s behavior issues. Steps can then be taken to teach the child a new way to communicate his/her needs: for example, “Johnny you are spelling words incorrectly because you love to see Miss Lisa’s reaction to it. Let me show you how you can get her attention in a friendlier way.” By reinterpreting disruptive and challenging behaviors through the lens of communication (needs, wants, intentions) see how you can actually affect a change towards more positive and successful outcomes.

It doesn't take long to see that Temple Grandin, the main character in this eponymous HBO movie, is, well, different--she tells us before the credits start that she's "not like other people." But "different" is not "less." Indeed, Grandin, who is now in her 60s, has accomplished a good deal more than a great many "normal" folks, let alone others afflicted with the autism that Grandin overcame on her way to earning a doctorate and becoming a bestselling author and a pioneer in the humane treatment of livestock. It wasn't easy. The doctor who diagnosed her at age 4 said she'd never talk and would have to be institutionalized. Only through the dogged efforts of her mother did Grandin learn to speak; to go to high school, college, and grad school; and to become a highly productive scientist, enduring the cruel taunts of her classmates and the resistance of many of the adults in her life. Her lack of social skills and sometimes violent reactions to the overstimulation in her environment made it tough to fit in, to say the least. Captivating, compelling, and thoroughly entertaining, Temple Grandin is highly recommended.

If you've just become interested in, or have a renewed concern about, how the special education process is supposed to work, here's your opportunity to get a quick, concise overview.
Seattle University School of Law is presenting a free webinar, "The Legal Structure of IDEA: How Special Education Is Supposed to Work," on Saturday, June 11, from 9 am to 11 am. Advance registration is required. The presenter will be S. James Rosenfeld, Adjunct Professor and Director, Education Law Programs. Professor Rosenfeld, the founder of COPAA, is also Director of the National Academy for IDEA Administrative Law Judges and Hearing Officers, which has trained special education hearing officers from approximately 30 states.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and will receive written materials (in electronic form) prior to the webinar. Instructions for participation will be provided shortly before the presentation date.

Renaissance Counseling & Evaluation Services, LLC11 am-1 pm "What to Do When What SHOULD Work Isn't Working" with Holsey Satterwhite and Dane Erixson of Renaissance Counseling & Evaluation Services. This mini training will provide parenting tips through an overview, practical intervention strategies, a couple of exercises, handouts, and conclude with a question and answer session.

Holsey Satterwhite has a Masters Degree in Social Work as well as a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling. He has more than 25 years of clinical experience working primarily with children and families. Dane Erixson serves as the Operations Manager/Trainer for RCES. He has more than 15 years of professional and administrative training and has worked with developmentally disabled adults and families and Washington State Children's Administration.

Renaissance Counseling & Evaluation Services provides therapeutic counseling, social/psychological and parenting evaluations, trainings and conflict resolutions for Washington State residents of all ages.

1 pm -3 pm "Helping Children with ADD/ADHD Succeed in School, at Home & In Life" with Nancie Payne, PhD, of Payne & Associates.

The goal of this session is to provide evidence-based techniques and strategies that help children in elementary, middle, and high school experience success. Working from a strengths-based model, Nancie will provide participants with tools that engage in specific learning styles,multiple intelligences, and characteristics/behaviors.

Nancie Payne is the President and CEO of Payne & Associates. She has spoken to hundreds of people in 38 states and Canada on a variety of subjects and has written numerous articles and book chapters on facilitating learning, assessment of special needs, transition to employment, and workplace accommodations. Nancie was diagnosed with hyperactivity as a child. She did not find out about her learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder until her late twenties. This knowledge has framed her passion for her work and belief that "everyone can learn."

Payne & Associates, Inc. provides comprehensive services for individuals who have learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, mild to moderate traumatic head injuries, seizure disorders, and mental health conditions. Jeanie Edwards is a Professor Emeriti, Department of Counselor and Special Education at Portland State University where she has taught for 30 years. In addition, Dr. Edwards is a private Consultant who works with treatment agencies around issues of Social/Sexual issues and Child Abuse for those with developmental disabilities

Active in improving the quality of life for those who are the victims of abuse, Dr. Edwards serves on the Board of WE CAN STOP, a private non-profit abuse prevention organization and lectures extensively.

Jeanie Edwards has provided the inspiration and impetus for the establishment of many special projects at Portland State University and in the community designed to prepare professionals to better serve children with special needs. Portland State University awarded her its highest teaching honor, The Burlington Northern Award, for her outstanding teaching and community service. She has few peers in the area of community service. In the classroom, she plays a key instructional role as well as inspiring university students. Her work in this difficult field of research (child abuse) is marked by a personal sensitivity and compassion while earning international recognition.

The author of many books and professional articles, Jeanie Edwards also has produced millions of dollars in grants to further research around issues relating to children with special needs. She is the founder of the Edwards Center, a private non-profit organization that provides supports for independent living for those with developmental disabilities and serves on the Board of Directors

An inspiring speaker, Jeanie Edwards is a frequent speaker and workshop presenter.

*Jigsaw Junction Summer Camps 2011!*
Jigsaw Junction is excited to announce our Summer Camps for 2011! We are offering week long camps that give children a great opportunity for structured, social fun in a safe environment that is shaped to fit individual needs. We will target group listening skills, pretend play, gross motor activities, fine motor activities, and social interactions. Below is a general description of how the camps are structured. Once registration is complete, we will distribute a more detailed outline of each camp to families.



• Each camp will take place Monday-Friday from 12:00noon – 3:30pm. Sign-up is on a weekly basis.

• Each camp requires a minimum enrollment of 4 kids and is capped to a maximum of 10 kids. Teacher-to-student ratio will not exceed 1:3. Any camps that do not meet the minimum enrollment will be

cancelled. Once the maximum number of kids is met, the camp will be considered closed; however,

the opportunity to place the child’s name on a waiting list is available. We will contact you in the

event that space becomes available.

• To secure your placement, camps require a non-refundable deposit of $50.00 per week at the time of

registration as well as a completed registration form. This deposit will be applied to your payment,

which is due in full on the first day the camp begins.
