LWHS senior named a 2010 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement winner


Joseph Wu, a senior at Lake Washington High School was named one of two Washington state winners of the 2010 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement, a signature program of the Siemens Foundation administered by the College Board. This year’s awards recognize 98 of America’s top achievers in the Advanced Placement Program (AP) science and mathematics courses with a $2,000 college scholarship to one male and one female student in each state. Two national winners are also recognized, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship.

Stella Schola spelling bee participant moves on to regional bee


Eighth-grader Adrian Leary was the runner-up at the Stella Schola Middle School spelling bee held on February 10 but he will represent the school at the regional bee on March 1. The winner, sixth-grader Meg Shriber, is unable to attend the regional event. Director of School Support for the Lake Washington Learning Community, david Larson served as a judge at the Stella Schola bee, along with former parent Jamie Gower.

Rose Hill Jr. Jazz Band performs at Science Fiction Festival


The Rose Hill Junior High Jazz Band performed at the Science Fiction Festival held at the Experience Music Project

Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMPSFM) in Seattle on February 7. The group performed science fiction themed music in the Sky Church at the EMP. The Science Fiction Festival at EMPSFM was held from February 7-11. A variety of events were held during the week, including performances by local school bands, orchestras, and instrumental ensembles; special screenings of science fiction B-movies; instructor led "Science of Science Fiction" activities; science fiction themed Sing Along – Dance Alongs; script readings; and short story readings from the Science Fiction Short Story contest award winners (grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12).

Lake Washington PTSA announces Reflections winners

Eighty-two Lake Washington students received awards through the Lake Washington PTSA Council’s Reflections program. This year’s theme for the Reflections art program was “Together We Can.” Students submitted entries in six different categories: dance/choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts. These 82 students received the following types of awards: Outstanding Interpretation, Awards of Excellence or Awards of Merit.

The following 20 students received “Outstanding Interpretation Awards” and will move on to the state-level PTSA competition:

Dance / Choreography:

Film Production:
