Redmond Council Unanimously Passes Resolution Opposing Initiative No. 638

Councilmember Jessica Forsythe authored  Resolution No. 1634 Opposing Initiative No. 638, Relating to Participation in Athletics at K-12 Schools.

Initiative Measure No. 638 concerns participation in athletics at K-12 schools. This measure would prohibit students it defines as “biologically male” from competing in certain school athletic activities intended for female students only. It would require verification of biological sex by students’ healthcare providers. Should this measure be enacted into law? Yes[ ] No [ ]

Council President Melissa Stuart indicated the process for getting Ms. Forsythe's resolution on the agenda was complicated and needed further study since it went "outside the norm" of Council.  Should our local government officials tell us how to vote?

Comments both for and against adoption of the resolutions were heard prior to Council deliberation and action on each item. This New Business Item is for the Purpose of Considering Passage of  Resolution No. 1634 proposed by Counilmember Jessica Forsythe, L.D. 48 Candidate.

The resolution was passed unanimously with focus on the transgender community, city values of inclusion, and privacy.
