I did confirm with legal that these signs are protected political free speech signs, just as Defund the Police sharing another political viewpoint would be as well.
The signs are not being placed out by City staff.
In regards to the “fine” specified on the sign - a citizen does not enforce the laws of Washington (RCW’s). They would have to seek guidance from the State or County if their signs were removed.
Please let me know if you have any other questions

ReplyDelete(40) "Political advertising" includes any advertising displays, newspaper ads, billboards, signs, brochures, articles, tabloids, flyers, letters, radio or television presentations, digital communication, or other means of mass communication, used for the purpose of appealing, directly or indirectly, for votes or for financial or other support or opposition in any election campaign.
This sign does not reference any election campaign so why would it be protected under RCW 29A.84.040?
I prefer that there are no signs in my neighborhood. Pro or con I don’t want to see them. The City of Redmond should review this ordinance.
ReplyDeleteIf these signs are placed on public property, then they are in violation of King County code. And the county should take action to make sure these restrictions are abided by.
