UPDATED: "Anatomy of the Rose Hill Burglary" and other crime prevention tips from the Redmond PD

Jim Bove, Redmond Police
Dear Redmond Community & Friends,

There will likely be another email coming your way in the next day or two with some other, non-time sensitive information; however, we did want to update you on a few things….

If you remember, we had several residential burglaries several weeks ago near the Redmond/Kirkland border in the Rose Hill area. In one situation this burglar came face to face with a young girl who was home alone. We’re pleased to report that there is someone in custody for at least one of these burglaries.

While we can’t confirm at this time if the suspect is responsible for the others in that area, many signs lead us to believe they may be connected.  Our detective specifically asked the suspect what he would tell families who are concerned about leaving their children home alone.  The suspect suggested that the child talk through the door and tell them that their mom/dad is in the shower….that would be enough to have him go somewhere else. Ironically enough, he was also charged in another city where he did the same thing—he knocked and nobody answered only to enter the home with an adult who was on the phone and had ignored the knocking. So there you have it, from a burglar’s mouth to our detective’s ears, (to my ears) to your eyes/emails. That being said, all burglars operate differently although this is similar to what we see in the area.  Read More >>

This type of news NEVER means to let your guard down because you always want to be aware and report suspicious activity. We hadn’t had any burglaries in that area since the above mentioned situation until this morning, so I guess a grim reminder to always be alert and report suspicious activity.

Also, as you may have heard, a child was approached/grabbed by a stranger yesterday as they were walking towards school. The suspect grabbed her wrist from behind and asked her to go with him. She said no and resisted. He pulled her arm and she said no again and screamed. He fled on foot. She did exactly what we would want anyone (child or adult) to do in that situation—cause a scene, bring awareness to you/suspect, report it to police as quickly as possible, etc. As soon as she screamed, he let go and ran, and then she ran into the school and reported it.

When possible, walking with at least one other person is usually safer, but it’s certainly a reminder to be aware of your surroundings whether you’re a child or adult.
