DOCUMENTARY FILM, "A Chemical Reaction" followed by discussion and refreshements hosted by Sustainable Redmond.  Thursday, October 28, 7-9 PM  Redmond Library.
Much of the film’s story focuses on Dr. June Irwin, a dermatologist who spurred the first town in Canada to ban lawn and garden chemicals pesticides in 1991. Since its release in fall 2009, this film has been inspiring people across Canada and the United States to challenge the status quo on behalf of their children, pets, and neighbors. The issue of pesticide use is particularly relevant in the Puget Sound region, where chemical fertilizers and pesticides run off into our lakes, rivers, streams, and the sound during each rainfall.  Donations, please.

TEEN TOATMASTERS. Tuesdays Oct 12 - Oct 26 from 5-6 PM @ Old Fire House Teen Center. It's certainly no secret that public speaking is a source of fear and stress for many. In this workshop we will discuss the essentials to creating an effective presentation, practice delivery techniques, and find ways to handle the jitters of standing in front of an audience. Public speaking is an important form of communication, a key in getting jobs and succeeding in academics. It certainly doesn't have to be scary and this workshop will help you make it fun. Ages: 14-19 Fee: $22R // $26 NR. See the Recreation Guide to register.

SWEDISH MEDICAL CENTER ART CONTEST. Swedish Medical Center is building a new campus in Redmond. Swedish would like to feature digital images of artwork or photos by children or young adults who live in the Redmond/Sammamish area. The images selected by the Swedish Medical Center Art Committee will be turned into long-lasting pieces of art to showcase in the new Swedish facility. The artwork and images should promote healing, health and community. Students between the ages of 5 to 18 are welcome to submit their artwork; submissions are due October 15 by midnight. Artwork and images must be submitted electronically. Because not everyone has the resources to transfer their artwork into a digital format, Swedish is offering a Photography Open House where they will photograph student artworks for submission. The open house will be held on Friday Oct. 15 from 4-6 p.m. at the Lake Washington School District Resource Center. Questions? Contact Brooke Kempner.
