Approved outdoor art for Police Building (right)
"Redmond Arts Commission (and baby)" picture posted on the Arts Commission Website
A city proposal to approve an "Art tax" to fund a $30,000 Outdoor Art project for the remodeled Public Safety Building is linked HERE. A photo of the artwork was provided courtesy of councilman David Carson.
Council will "vote" on this proposal during their meeting on Tuesday, 1/15. This item is on the "Consent Agenda" so council automatically authorizes use of existing funds & conversation will avoided unless a councilmember "pulls Item #4".
The Arts Commission has been recently rejuvinated and reorganized with nine capable, creative, enthusiastic citizen volunteers and outstanding staff. Some of them are my friends. The commission holds public meetings advertised on their website. Comments from citizens are welcome and appreciated by the commissioners by email RAC@REDMOND.GOV or during meetings.

ReplyDeleteWhy can't I find a picture and description of this proposed Outdoor Art on the Arts Commission website?
thanks for posting this bob, but the article to some might read like this is a new tax when in fact the money would come from an existing fund for art that requires 1% of all new buildings or remodels go for artwork to embellish a structure. that fund is described further in the link off the blog to the proposal. the idea of recognizing our men in uniform with a mural sounds great!!
ReplyDeleteThe artwork funding was approved
ReplyDelete(6-1) after questioning & concerns from Mr. Cole about the funding method. Carson voted ney.
The reason that I voted "no" was the same reason that Mr. Cole chose to pull the item from the Consent Agenda. I talked with Mr. Cole after the meeting and he had concerns about this "banking" of art funds year-to-year and that there may be some good reasons why we should not approach the art acquisition in this manner.
ReplyDeleteThe capital project in question was not priced at $3 million, so the art that accompanies this addition to the Public Safety Building should have been around $12,000, but funds from smaller projects were pooled to get to the $30K pricetag for the art installation.
