Lake Washington Schools Excel in Washington Achievement Awards
Twelve schools honored, half for the second year in a row
Redmond, Wash. –The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the State Board of Education (SBE) have announced that 186 schools across the state will be honored with 2010 Washington Achievement Awards. The list of schools includes 12 schools in Lake Washington School District. All award-winning schools will be honored during a ceremony on April 27 at Lincoln High School in Tacoma.

Schools are recognized as top performers in seven categories: Overall Excellence, Language Arts, Math, Science, Extended Graduation Rate, Improvement and Closing Achievement Gaps. This year is the first that schools are being recognized specifically for improvement and closing achievement gaps. Some schools are honored in more than one of these categories.
Ten Lake Washington schools will be recognized for overall excellence: Lakeview Elementary (Kirkland), Mann Elementary (Redmond), McAuliffe Elementary (Sammamish), Mead Elementary (Sammamish), Rockwell Elementary (Redmond), Rosa Parks Elementary (Redmond), Kirkland Junior High (Kirkland), Eastlake High School (Sammamish), Juanita High School (Kirkland) and Redmond High School (Redmond). Four of those schools also received awards in 2009: Mann Elementary, McAuliffe Elementary, Mead Elementary and Eastlake High School
Lake Washington schools also fared very well in science, with two out of only seven schools in this category statewide. Rosa Parks Elementary will be honored for science achievement in addition to overall excellence. International Community School (Kirkland) will be honored in science for the second year in a row.
In addition, Juanita High School will be recognized for their extended graduation rate. Juanita Elementary (Kirkland) will be honored for closing achievement gaps for the second year in a row.
Schools are selected for awards based on their statewide assessment data for the three previous years. This data is analyzed using the Achievement Index and methodology approved by both OSPI and the SBE. For more information, visit the Washington Achievement Awards section of the OSPI website.
