OPINION: Central Connector Parking Lot Art

Sky Painting
Credit/ City of Redmond, WA,

THE CITY REMOVED PICTURES FROM THEIR WEBSITE OF ALL THEIR ICONIC OUTDOOR ART including "SKY PAINTING" where a large parking lot was painted for all to see from a helicopter. I like "SIGNALS" in the linear park but the taxpayers will have to spend $1M to relocate the "ERRATIC" from the light rail line.

  1. I personally prefer "nature's art"--beautiful, healthy landscaping, caring for our trees and green spaces in the Redmond area. I don't mind so much man-made art on the side of a building, or highway structures. But I think socks on trees, psychedelic painted parking lots, the art pieces in the water at city hall or artificial structures are not soothing to the eyes. As Redmond has grown and increased its building structures, I believe it's especially important that we increase, care for and cherish the city's natural beauty.

  2. I think we have room for both natural and manmade art in Redmond. Sure, sometimes I don't get it or it inspires humorous comments from my kids. But that's part of what makes it fun to walk together. Art is supposed to inspire reaction. Who hasn't laughed about that statue of a woman doing the yoga chair pose that is along the Sammamish River walk behind city hall? It's part of who we are.

  3. Art connects us...so relevant for our diverse community. We communicate with each other when looking at it. I like natural art because I find nature soothes me and de-stresses from the commotion of urban centers.
