City Council approves over $382,454 on projects to improve fish passage in three Redmond creeks

In summer 2013, City Stormwater Maintenance crews improved the fish passage and

habitat at Juel Creek. The crews improved fish passage by removing a small concrete

culvert and a concrete dam from the creek and improved fish habitat by installing large

woody debris in the creek. Washington Conservation Crews installed plants to preserve

the banks and to meet permit requirements.

This summer, the Stormwater Maintenance crews will be doing additional work at Juel

Creek to further improve the fish passage and fish habitat. The primary reasons for using

City crews rather than a contractor to complete the small amount of work remaining at this

location is to save costs. The City crews will complete the improvements by removing an

existing fish barrier culvert and replace it with a large arch pipe culvert. The crews will

also install large woody debris in the small pond located at the culvert outfall.

Project Description

The Peters Creek and Seidel Creek stream improvements will be constructed by a

contractor this summer. At Peters Creek, within an existing City easement in the

Shadowbrook Apartments complex, the project will improve the channel to allow for fish

passage, improve on-going sediment management and maintenance of the sediment pond

in the creek and stabilize the existing NE 148th Street culvert. The Peters Creek project

will also install a creek bypass pipe for diverting the creek during maintenance of the

existing sediment pond. The project at Seidel Creek will provide for fish passage by

removing the existing dam and installing a roughened channel. Both the Peters Creek and

Seidel Creek projects will also include grading and landscaping.
