An Educational Forum On Writing to Heal Yourself:
Journaling for Mental Health

                  Guests:                                  Dianne Aprile
                   Date:                                     Tuesday, April 16, 2013 7 PM - 9 PM
Location:                              Evergreen Hospital, Suite Tan 100,
                                                                  12303 NE 130th Lane,
                                                                  Kirkland, WA 98034

One of the best ways to deal with difficult situations is to write about them. Writer Dianne Aprile leads a hands-on workshop designed to help participants build a practice of journal keeping. Research indicates that regularly writing in a journal can  reduce intrusive thoughts about negative events and improve memory. These benefits, researchers believe, may in turn free up our cognitive resources for other mental activities, including coping effectively with stress. Like meditation, yoga or other focused disciplines, keeping a journal 20 minutes a day, three days a week, has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health.   Read More >>

Dianne will lead the group in writing exercises and provide handouts with tips for making the most of your journaling practice.

Dianne Aprile teaches creative nonfiction at Spalding University’s MFA in writing program and leads writing workshops across the country. She is the author and editor of five books, and her poetry and prose appear in anthologies, magazines and journals. She is the recipient of regional awards from the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association for her coverage of mental illness for newspapers and magazines. Her current book in progress is Thicker Than Water, a memoir of her special relationship with an eccentric aunt whose long, resilient, friend-filled life belied a 70-year struggle with the stigma and challenges of mental illness.
NAMIWALK  2013:

Join us for the 9th Annual NAMIWalk:
Saturday May 18, 2013
Marina Park, Kirkland WA

The ninth annual NAMIWalk will be on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Marina Park in Kirkland.  This is a lovely location, a popular area for pedestrians and a well-traveled route for vehicles, and brings much needed visibility to the event.

Yes, it’s coming up fast and we really need your help.  Unfortunately the 2012 Walk that was held this past October brought in only half of the funds that we were hoping for.  That’s a big loss.  If we are going to have a successful spring walk in 2013, we need to form many more Walk teams and find new sponsors.
If you own a business and would like to become a sponsor, or if you would like to form a Walk team, please contact barbthompson@nami-eastside.org or call the NES Office at (425) 885-6264.  The minimum amount to sponsor is $250.
The NAMIWalk Steering Committee is hoping to persuade the Mariner Moose that Marina Park is  once again, the place to be on this sunny Saturday in May.

The WALK website makes it easy and convenient to sign up to walk, donate to the event or register as a team captain. Just go to namiwalks.org/Washington.  If you have any problems, please call the Gazala Uradnik, Walk Manager at gazala@gfsfund.com or the NAMI Eastside office at (425) 885-6264.

The walk is the primary fundraising event for NAMI Washington and the state's 23 NAMI affiliates. The event also serves to promote mental health awareness and remind people that NAMI exists across Washington to help individuals with mental illness and their families.
NAMI Basics Course has moved from April 4th thru May 9th
to May 2d thru June 6th
Location still in Redmond
Basics is a free, six-session course that will meet once a week for 6 weeks.
Who can attend a NAMI Basics course?

The NAMI Basics course is specifically designed for parents and other primary care-givers of children and adolescents who are living with mental illness. It is not necessary that the child have received a specific diagnosis.

Caregivers who suspect their child is experiencing symptoms of mental illness can also benefit greatly from the course as they begin to navigate the evaluation and treatment process.

NAMI Basics offers education and support. Taught by parents who have lived similar experiences with their own children, NAMI Basics is an educational program that provides learning and practical insight for families.

To Register Please call the NAMI Eastside Office at (425) 885-6264 or email us at:
